Mark Cuban Would Turn Frank McCourt's Mess into World Series Ring

Ryan RudnanskyNov 2, 2011

Frank McCourt has been hanging onto the Los Angeles Dodgers for dear life after a public divorce case with ex-wife Jamie for $130 million, but it appears his days as owner are over.

McCourt announced along with Major League Baseball on Tuesday that they will seek approval from federal bankruptcy court to auction off the historic franchise.

It ends a turbulent few months between McCourt and commissioner Bud Selig, who have been battling in the courts and in the media. Selig rejected a proposed TV deal between the Dodgers and Fox earlier this year that would have netted McCourt $385 million up front.

Now, the competition begins as to who will become the next owner of one of baseball's most prized franchises. The candidates are in, and it's time for the race to begin.

So far, several high-profile figures have been named as possible successors, including NHL Penguins co-owner Ron Burkle, L.A.-based businessman Alec Gores and apartment developer Alan Casden.

But perhaps the most noteworthy individual to be named is Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who just led the Mavericks to an NBA title over the Miami Heat.

Now, Cuban has reportedly backed off after the price tag was set at $1 billion, but, for a billionaire, it's not like it's completely out of the question for Cuban.

You have to wonder what Cuban becoming owner would mean for the Dodgers. As much as he's rubbed people the wrong way from time to time, there's no denying his passion or his success. Before the NBA title, Cuban and the Mavericks had won 50 games for 11 straight seasons.

Cuban hasn't even been part owner in baseball, but he has expressed interest in the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs throughout the years. He certainly pays attention to the sport and the people who have succeeded in front offices throughout the league. He has connections, and that would be another reason he would be a godsend for the Dodgers.

It's worth noting that McCourt likely isn't going to make any concessions for perhaps a better candidate. He has plenty of bills to pay and will be seeking as much as he can get.

But perhaps Cuban's stance will change. He's not the kind of man who settles for a mere NBA championship. One of the reasons he's become such a successful businessman is because he's always looking ahead for new opportunities.

Since 2009, the Dodgers have disappointed, and you have to wonder if the turmoil at the top had something to do with the unrest in the dugout.

But the Dodgers do have some players to help turn this around, including ace Clayton Kershaw and outfielder Matt Kemp.

They just need an owner with the experience of turning around a franchise.

Cuban would be the man for the job.
