Robert Woods, Seth Doege and 5 Heisman Trophy Sleepers to Watch

Adam SpencerNov 1, 2011

We can all agree that Andrew Luck is the front-runner for the 2011 Heisman Trophy.

Then there's Trent Richardson, LaMichael James, Landry Jones, Robert Griffin, Denard Robinson and plenty of other star players close behind.

But, if some of those players slip down the stretch (like Robinson did in 2010), there are a few sleepers who could jump into the top 10 in terms of Heisman votes.

Let's take a look at five of those players now.

5. Henry Josey, RB, Missouri Tigers

1 of 5

Josey is the biggest reason the Tigers still have a shot at a bowl game.

He's leading the FBS with 8.5 yards per carry and has more than 1,000 rushing yards through eight games.

If he starts scoring more touchdowns in Mizzou's last few games, he could jump into the top 10 players in the Heisman race.

And, he'll be back in the race for the next couple years.

4. Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia Mountaineers

2 of 5

Smith, the Mountaineers junior quarterback, has been the engineer behind the seventh-best passing offense in the FBS.

He's been doing a great job taking care of the ball, with 20 touchdown passes and just five interceptions.

And, he has the Mountaineers in a good position to win the Big East if they can beat Cincinnati on Nov. 12.

He's fifth in the FBS in passing yards, with 2,715 yards under his belt. He deserves to be in the Heisman discussion this year.

3. Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson Tigers

3 of 5

Geno Smith has a 4-1 TD-to-interception ratio. Boyd has a 5-1 ratio, with 25 touchdowns and five interceptions.

The sophomore's surprising play is the biggest reason the Tigers are in a good position to win the ACC and go to a BCS bowl game.

He's currently seventh in the FBS in passing yards and deserves to be mentioned among any potential Heisman sleepers.

2. Robert Woods, WR, USC Trojans

4 of 5

The only reason USC quarterback Matt Barkley is in the Heisman mix is because of Robert Woods.

Woods has been Barkley's go-to guy this year.

He currently ranks fifth in the FBS in receiving yards, with 991 yards. He's also tied for fifth in receiving touchdowns, with nine.

His 81 receptions is good enough for a tie for second in the college football world.

It'll be fun to watch how much Woods improves next year and beyond.

1. Seth Doege, QB, Texas Tech Red Raiders

5 of 5

Doege has been electric for the Red Raiders in 2011.

He's fourth in the FBS in passing yards, with 2,779 and has a 22-6 TD-to-interception ratio.

He's the biggest reason Texas Tech was able to put Oklahoma's championship hopes on life support a couple weeks ago.

I know that every Texas Tech quarterback puts up ridiculous passing numbers, but it's time they started getting some serious attention as potential Heisman Trophy winners.

The Heisman is for the best player in college football, regardless of if he is a product of a system or not.
