2012 NFL Draft: Why Suck for Luck Will Hurt League
The sports world just can't help themselves. When one amazing bit of hype dies another is born in its stead. Welcome to the post Tim Tebow NFL, where teams are forced to suck for Andrew Luck. This won't end well.
I think we can stick a fork in the Tim Tebow hype that has captivated for far too long. It's clear that Tebow will hardly be a superstar quarterback. If he is going to be even a competent one, it's going to take some time.
That leaves us scrambling to bestow the next "it" man of the moment. This time, the player is actually quite the baller. Andrew Luck is as close to a sure thing as you can get in a college player. That would be the big difference between him and Tebow.
They do however share the same level of hype and the Suck for Luck campaign will prove to be disastrous for the NFL.
First off, we have the obvious fallout for Andrew Luck, the player. The first thing that happens for a big time name is for that name to be dragged through the mud.
As you can see from a re-tweeted Adam Schefter post, the Andrew Luck bashing is in its infancy.
This is only the beginning. Soon the nation will be torn in two with one part of the nation in love with Luck and the other ready to strangle his neck. Hype has a way of doing that.
This isn't the biggest reason that Andre Luck will usher a pall on the NFL. No, the media has already done that in the Suck for Luck campaign.
The worst teams in the league are not only forced to be called out for being awful, now they are being called for being quitters.
Expect a lot more of these tweets as the season begins to wind down. You will have the men on the worst teams being called for being the worst thing you can be in sports, a no good quitter.
Isn't it enough that these teams are awful? In a rare turn, every single loss will be measured and scrutinized for the possibility they are laying down.
Every player will tell you that wins and losses come out of nowhere. Sometimes you just find your way into a marvelous win. The NFL is arduous enough to be dealt losses each and every week.
These guys are not getting banged around in the hope that one guy is going to come save the day. The thought is ridiculous.
Suck for Luck is here to kick some teams when they are already down. It's time for it to end before it really gets out of hand.
