BCS Rankings: How LSU vs. Alabama Rematch Could Take Place in Title Game

Alex CallosOct 30, 2011

The top two teams in all of college football square off in one of the biggest regular season games in recent memory on Saturday when the LSU Tigers travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide.

LSU is ranked No. 1 in every poll and Alabama is No. 2. They are clearly the best two teams in the country and the game on Saturday will be epic in all aspects.

While the winner of Saturday's game is the front runner to play for the national championship, it is not out of the question that a rematch could take place in New Orleans on Jan. 9 for all the marbles.

For that to happen a lot of things have to go the SEC's way. Here is what needs to occur for LSU and Alabama to play for the national championship.

Stanford and Oklahoma State must each lose. There are currently six undefeated teams, but Houston and Boise State could win out and likely will not reach the national championship game.

If Stanford and Oklahoma State both lose that will open the door for Alabama and LSU.

Oklahoma State still has to take on Oklahoma the final game of the season and Stanford has Oregon coming up in less than two weeks. Both of these are possible losses.

Alabama must beat LSU. The Crimson Tide are behind the Tigers in all the polls and are taking on LSU at home. An LSU loss on the road would be much less devastating than Alabama losing at home.

The game must be close throughout. A game that is decided by three-points or less would be ideal, but a seven point game could be all these teams need.

They will also need some love from the pollsters. Would a loss at Alabama drop LSU below an undefeated Boise State team in the Coaches' Poll? That is the ultimate question that we will not know until after the game. Staying in front of the Broncos in the Coaches' Poll is critical for LSU to stay ahead in the BCS standings.

As it stands now, LSU and Alabama are so far ahead of Boise State in the rankings, that a loss by LSU to Alabama will almost certainly not drop them below Broncos.

The lowest computer ranking for LSU or Alabama is No. 3, while Boise State does not have a computer ranking higher than No. 4.

With that being said, an undefeated Boise State team would have an argument, or at least the Broncos think they would against a one-loss SEC team.

However, if Stanford and Oklahoma State both falter and LSU loses a close one at Alabama, a rematch in the BCS national championship between LSU and Alabama is not only possible, but probable.
