BCS Rankings: Predicting 5 Upsets That Will Shake Up the Rankings
October is history. As we enter November, the national title picture is beginning to take shape, with Alabama, LSU and Oklahoma State the only teams to control their own destiny.
The top of the polls held relatively true to form in the season's first seven weeks, but the last two have seen Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Clemson and Kansas State knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten. Plenty of challenges remain for the top contenders, but even the Texas Techs of the world can come from nowhere and pull off a shocking upset.
Here's a look at five games that could throw a major wrench into the BCS picture.
Oklahoma State vs. Texas Tech, November 12th
1 of 5Texas Tech will look to complete a sweep of the state of Oklahoma when Oklahoma State travels to Lubbock on November 12th. In recent years, both Oklahoma and Texas have seen national title hopes go up in west Texas smoke. Tommy Tuberville and the Red Raiders would love nothing more than to ruin the Cowboys' season.
Tuberville earned the reputation of a big-game coach while at Auburn, going a combined 14-6 against rivals Alabama and LSU. After the stunner in Norman earlier this season, it appears Tuberville's Texas Tech teams will also be at their best when the lights are shining brightest.
USC vs. Oregon, November 19th
2 of 5While the Trojans came up just short against Stanford, they'll get a chance at the other Pac-12 heavyweight when they travel to Eugene on November 19th. USC has lost the past two meetings with the Ducks, so revenge will be on their mind in what they'll likely treat as their bowl game.
Oregon hasn't been as sharp as they were for most of last season, and USC's defense has played well against both Notre Dame and Stanford. The Trojans catch a break with the timing of the game, as the Ducks will be fresh off their colossal trip to Palo Alto.
Arkansas vs. LSU, November 25th
3 of 5As good as Les Miles has been at LSU, his nemesis has been the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Hogs have beaten the Bayou Bengals in three of the past four meetings, losing only in 2009 after a missed field goal sent the game to overtime.
Bobby Petrino's offense has scored 30 points or more in all three meetings since he arrived in Fayetteville. The game will kickoff at 1:30 local time on the day after Thanksgiving, a huge break for the visitors. Depending on what happens over the next few weeks, this game could decide the SEC West title.
Alabama vs. Auburn, November 26th
4 of 5The Iron Bowl is the greatest rivalry in college football, and the two bitter rivals have played back-to-back classics. Both teams have had to overcome double-digit deficits on the other's home turf to win the game and eventually the national title.
Auburn (7-4) jumped to a 14-0 lead over Alabama (11-0) in the last meeting on The Plains, and the Tide needed a late drive to pull out a 26-21 victory. This year's meeting looks to mirror 2009 in a number of ways, so don't be surprised if it's a third straight thriller between the past two national champions.
Notre Dame vs. Stanford, November 26th
5 of 5The Cardinal have won the past two meetings with the Irish after dropping seven straight, and this year's meeting could mean as much as any in the history of the rivalry. Notre Dame has shown it can be a very good team when it doesn't beat itself.
In what might be Andrew Luck's last game at Stanford Stadium, emotions will be running high, especially if the Cardinal are still in the national title picture. After a disappointing season, Notre Dame could atone for their head-scratching losses with a huge road upset.
