BCS Rankings: 8 BCS Top 25 Teams One Loss Away from Irrelevance

Matt ShetlerOct 29, 2011

After last week's upsets of both Oklahoma and Wisconsin, positioning in the BCS standings is starting to become cutthroat.

We are at the position in the season where one loss will pretty much end the season for those still competing for a spot in the BCS Championship Game.

Here's a look at a handful of teams that will become irrelevant if they don't take care of business the rest of the regular season.

No. 4 Boise State

1 of 8

No knock on the Broncos, but an undefeated Boise State plays in a BCS game, even if it's not the title game that they would desire.

However if they are upset before the regular season ends, a one-loss Boise State has no chance at a BCS game.

No. 9 Oklahoma

2 of 8

A one-loss Oklahoma still has a likely chance at a BCS game, but if they should stumble again, the rest of the Sooners season becomes pretty much pointless and everyone would forget that they were once the No. 1 team in the nation.

No. 10 Arkansas

3 of 8

Struggling with Vanderbilt wasn't exactly in the cards for Bobby Petrino and Arkansas. If they should lose another game before they meet LSU during the season's final weekend, their season becomes an underachieving one.

A three-loss Arkansas team wouldn't resemble a team that sat in the Top 10 for most of the year, even if two of the losses were at the hands of LSU and Alabama.

No. 15 Wisconsin

4 of 8

The Badgers could go from title contenders to an afterthought very quickly if they suffer another regular season loss.

If they turn it around, the Rose Bowl is still a real possibility, but if they suffer after effects from last week's Hail Mary then they become just another average team.

No. 16 Texas A&M

5 of 8

What could have been for Texas A&M if they would have taken care of business in the second half against Oklahoma State or Arkansas.

They've rebounded nicely and their offense is as explosive as ever, but their defense could cost them another game.

After losing a third game in overtime to Missouri today, the Aggies become just another underachieving football team.

No. 17 Houston

6 of 8

Case Keenum and the Cougars are a good story as long as they run the table. Even if they do, they likely won't climb much in the BCS Standings, but if they suffer a loss then what they do the rest of the season will become irrelevant.

No. 19 Penn State

7 of 8

The Nittany Lions undoubtedly have one of the weakest resumes of any seven-win team in the country, but 7-1 is 7-1.

They haven't had a good win yet this year and with the Big Ten having a down season, they won't get the opportunity for many.

They finish with Ohio State, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Win those and they can make a climb up the standings. Lose one though and they really wouldn't have accomplished much on the season.

They are one team with still a lot to prove the rest of the way.

No. 25 West Virginia

8 of 8

If WVU didn't make the rest of their season irrelevant by getting blown out by Syracuse, one more loss will certainly do the trick for them.

Calling their season a success if they don't win the Big East is a bit of a stretch and even if they win the conference as a three-loss team it's not saying much.

The Mountaineers can't get away from the Big east quick enough.
