BCS Rankings: 5 Teams That Have the Toughest Road to the BCS Title Game

Randy ChambersOct 29, 2011

It's about that time of year in college football where we start to break down who is a serious National Championship contender and who isn't. Some are ranked highly but don't have the talent to get there, while others have may lack talent but take advantage of a weak schedule.

Then you have the teams that may have the talent to compete with anybody, but a tough schedule may hurt their chances.

Here are the teams that have the most difficult schedule to get to the BCS title game.

LSU Tigers

1 of 5

The LSU Tigers have already had a difficult schedule just to get to this point, beating five ranked teams. But now they have a matchup against the Alabama Crimson Tide next week in what will probably determine the winner of the SEC and secure a spot in the National Championship game.

Even if the Tigers manage to survive that big game, they still have to finish the season with a game against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Then, of course, you would have the SEC Championship game against probably South Carolina or Georgia.

Alabama Crimson Tide

2 of 5

Much like the LSU Tigers, Alabama wins and they're more than likely in; they lose and well, those dreams may be shattered. Good thing for them is the big game is in their house and they don't have to travel anywhere.

But, of course, even if they get by LSU, they still have the Iron Bowl game against Auburn to close out the season. It doesn't matter how bad this Auburn team is playing, the Tigers will always be up for the game and will provide a stiff test for the Crimson Tide.

If Alabama manages to get by those two tough teams, they will still have the SEC Championship game against South Carolina or Georgia.

Stanford Cardinal

3 of 5

Stanford has had an easy schedule throughout the year, but this is where things begin to get difficult. Games against USC, Oregon, California and Notre Dame may cause this team to trip up at some point in the season.

Stanford is one of the most talented teams on both sides of the ball, but in order to be in the National Championship, they have to prove themselves.

The last month of the season will give them every opportunity.

Oklahoma State Cowboys

4 of 5

Oklahoma State has already beaten two ranked teams this year and has one of the best offenses in the country, but the brutal part of the Big 12 schedule is about to take effect.

Games against Baylor, Kansas State, Texas Tech and Oklahoma will really test this team and see if the Cowboys can get away with a defense that gives up a ton of points.

The Cowboys could end up losing this week to the Bears if they aren't careful.

Let the games begin.

Kansas State Wildcats

5 of 5

Oh, you didn't think that Kansas State had a shot at the National title?

The Wildcats already have a win over the Baylor Bears and have to finish their schedule against Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Texas. You're telling me if the Wildcats finish the year undefeated with that schedule, they don't deserve a shot at the Championship?

Unfortunately, that's the same reason they have the most difficult schedule in the country.
