BCS Rankings 2011: 5 BCS Teams That Will Suffer Broken Dreams in Week 9

T.J. McaloonOct 26, 2011

It's Halloween weekend, so there will be plenty of costumes for parties and trick-or-treating that you will be seeing. But, just like those little trick-or-treaters, there are five teams in this BCS Top 25 standings that will play tricks, not treats, on their fans this weekend.

So if your team happens to be on this slideshow, don't be sad; it's not our fault that they will suffer a horrible, crushing loss this weekend.

Your dreams of BCS bowl games and championships will be crushed this weekend with their loss.

Not because it's Halloween week, but because it just so happens your team has a bit of bad scheduling, as they play a really good team this week.

No. 11 Michigan State Spartans

1 of 5

The Spartans are on quite the roll, winning two straight games against ranked teams, but both games were at home.

The wins against Michigan and Wisconsin both were deserving, as Wisconsin was the dominant team in both contests. But, they were at home, where the crowd noise played a huge factor in both victories.

This week, Michigan State travels to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on a very good Nebraska team. The last time Michigan State was tested in against a good team on the road was their loss at Notre Dame, where they were crushed 31-13.

Two things to take into consideration for Michigan State.

1. Is this a let down game after two huge victories?

2. How does this Michigan State offense operate when they do not have the home field advantage?

No. 18 Michigan Wolverines

2 of 5

Let's stay in the state of Michigan, as the Wolverines have an all of a sudden tough game against the Purdue Boilermakers.

A month ago, Purdue was embarrassed at home against Notre Dame. But since then, they have put together a 2-1 record while upsetting No. 23 Illinois at home last week.

With a week off, Michigan has had a chance to get healthy and prepare for this Purdue defense. But, as it was shown two weeks ago against Michigan State, a physical defense that puts a lot of pressure on the quarterback can shut down this high-powered offense.

Purdue will hit Michigan's QB Denard Robinson a lot on Saturday, frustrating this offense, thus causing turnovers and resulting in an upset for Purdue.

No. 8 Kansas State Wildcats

3 of 5

Kansas State is the lowest ranked undefeated team from a BCS conference. This week, they get their biggest game of their year, as they host the No. 9 Oklahoma Sooners.

A win here will move KSU ahead of teams like Clemson, Stanford and quite possibly Boise State, all teams that are undefeated like KSU.

However, this is Kansas State's toughest matchup, and Oklahoma has not lost in back-to-back games since the '99 season.

Kansas State is a good story this year, but against Oklahoma, they will be over-matched and overwhelmed by the Sooner talent.

No. 25 West Virginia Mountaineers

4 of 5

West Virginia is the best team in the Big East. However, they do not play like the great team that they are when they're on the road. Point in case, last week's upset loss at Syracuse. The 'Cuse defense put a lot of pressure on Geno Smith, which rushed throws and led to this crushing defeat.

This week against a good Rutgers team that beat Syracuse earlier this year, WVU will see the same type of pressure and suffer the same loss.

No. 15 Wisconsin Badgers

5 of 5

There has been a number of teams this year that suffered a crushing first loss, followed by an even more crushing second loss, thus sending them far out of the polls. Teams like Illinois and Georgia Tech had great seasons crushed by two back-to-back losses.

This week, against a good defense but bad offense Ohio State Buckeye team, the Badgers are on a big upset alert.

The game is in Columbus, and the Buckeyes could extract some revenge on the Badgers for what Wisconsin did to the Buckeyes last year.

Ohio State will come out, after a bye week, ready for this game and ready to shut down RusselMania.
