The English Premier League's Worst 11 of the Week

Allan JiangOct 25, 2011

With man of the match awards and the EA SPORTS Index, we know who the best players during Matchday 9 were, but do we know who were the worst?

I'm talking about the players who were anonymous, who showed no determination, who were incompetent, who let down their teammates and whose antics became news.

Here is the Premier League's worst 11 of the week.

Goalkeeper: David de Gea

1 of 11

Performance grade: C

David de Gea wasn't the main reason why Manchester United were humiliated, more so, he limited some of the damage.

Though amidst what happened, people seem to be forgetting that the Spaniard made another mistake when he let David Silva's shot go through his legs.

Four mistakes in 10 games now.

That being said, de Gea has looked an excellent shot-stopper.

Defender: Patrice Evra

2 of 11

Performance grade: F

Maybe the fiasco surrounding Patrice Evra's accusations of being racially vilified by Luis Suárez affected the Frenchman.

I say probably not. Last season, he was disappointing to say the least, however he has improved this season.

However against Manchester City, Evra was dragged all over the place and was fortunate that referee Chris Foy (who officiated QPR vs. Chelsea) wasn't officiating this game, because Foy would have sent Evra off.

Defender: Jonny Evans

3 of 11

Performance grade: F

Jonny Evans has always been a weak link in the Manchester United defence.

He isn't consistent enough nor a good enough defender to see him in the starting 11.

His foolish decision to haul down Mario Balotelli speaks volumes to the football IQ of Evans.

Does Evans not remember Manchester United coming back from 2-0 down to beat Manchester City 3-2 in the Community Shield?

What about the epic 4-3 win against Manchester City?

Earlier in the season, Evans was turned inside out by Benfica's Óscar Cardozo, and he has no pace whatsoever.

Defender: Rio Ferdinand

4 of 11

Performance grade: D

Rio Ferdinand looked good when Manchester United were playing well, but a real judge of character is how he reacted when the going got tough.

Pointing fingers at other players, even though he himself just lost interest towards the end of the game.

The only player that seemed to care was Wayne Rooney.

For me, the Manchester United centre-back pairing should permanently be Nemanja Vidić and Phil Jones.

Defender: Roger Johnson

5 of 11

Performance grade: D

Roger Johnson was caught out of position when the ball was lofted over him, therefore allowing Danny Graham to score.

Where was Johnson's leadership when shambolic defending from his back four saw Joe Allen score?

Perhaps you can now see why the Molineux faithful have been calling for Jody Craddock to replace Johnson.

Defender: José Enrique

6 of 11

Performance grade: D

José Enrique was lazy when it came to marking up in the second half. He was missing in action when Anthony Pilkington delivered in the cross, and boom, 1-1. Also the Spaniard wasn't as efficient when going forward as he gave away possession in advanced positions.

Midfielder: John Obi Mikel

7 of 11

Performance grade: D

Oriol Romeu was so good against Genk, so why does he get relegated to the bench?

Romeu offered incisive passing, he was strong in the tackle, he was mobile and Chelsea won 5-0.

John Mikel made next to no tackles and was constantly beat on the dribble when he played in defence during the second half.

Midfielder: Stewart Downing

8 of 11

Performance grade: F

Where's the end-product Stewart Downing?

He had four shots; all four were blocked by a Norwich defender.

In the first half when Liverpool had a free kick within scoring distance, you would have thought Charlie Adam would have taken it but Downing took it and it hit the wall.

Downing doesn't deserve to be in the starting lineup because he isn't producing any chances or scoring any goals.

Midfielder: Charles N'Zogbia

9 of 11

Performance grade: D

Charles N'Zogbia should take a leaf out of teammate Chris Herd's book.

The young Australian tried his heart out, putting his body on the line for his club and was a bright spark...up until he was mysteriously sent off.

N'Zogbia was given a rare start and the Frenchman wasted it with an anemic and unproductive performance.

Forward: Didier Drogba

10 of 11

Performance grade: F

Having watched José Bosingwa wrongly receive a red card, Didier Drogba thought it would be wise to give referee Chris Foy a reason to send the Ivorian off.

Going two-footed on Adel Taarabt who had already been fouled several times before.

Maybe Drogba didn't watch how Fernando Torres got sent off.

So, so stupid.

The only positive is that now Chelsea manager André Villas-Boas has no excuses in not playing Romelu Lukaku.

Forward: Marouane Chamakh

11 of 11

Performance grade: D

Pathetic display from Marouane Chamakh.

This is what Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger said about Robin van Persie, who replaced Chamakh and then won the game for Arsenal:

"

"He had a check in the morning and was medically all right to be on the bench. You think 15 times before leaving him out, you think 'do I really do it or not'. With the number of games he has played and the history he has, you are cautious."

"

Wenger doesn't even need to think twice about dropping Chamakh to the bench the next game.

It's hard to defend Chamakh, like during Ramadan, you could say well his energy is being drained because he is fasting.

However Ramadan is over and the Moroccan plays the game as if he is fasting everyday.
