BCS Rankings: Why LSU Can Run Table at No. 1

Nicholas MoffittOct 24, 2011

The LSU Tigers have overcome suspensions, more suspensions and probably suspensions to come, but they continue their dominance of highly ranked opponents. Recently demolishing Auburn 45-10.

They have a few more challenges to get over the hump to the national championship and try and bring the trophy home.

Here are five reasons why LSU can run the table at No. 1.

1. Jarrett Lee Has Proven He Can Lead the Offense

1 of 7

With early year suspension of who was thought to be starting quarterback Jordan Jefferson for assault and battery. The quarterback position was a big question mark and whether Jarrett Lee could lead them to victory all season.

Now sitting at eight wins and no losses, he has proven he is capable of winning, especially in big games. They have a point differential against ranked opponents of 117, that's just ranked opponents. Proving that they can do it when it counts.

Lee has proven he can fulfill the role because he has shown he can minimize turnovers. He has thrown for 13 TD's on the year while only throwing 1 INT. It shows that even if he doesn't have the most touchdown's, he understands that he can rely on the run game and minimize quarterback error to make the offense even more potent.

If they run the table, they will live and die by the choices of Jarrett Lee.

2. The Defense Can Make Crucial Halftime Adjustments

2 of 7

The LSU defense has been the staple of the team and held opponents to 11.5 points per game, which ranks 3rd in the nation. Pretty astonishing seeing as they've played five ranked opponents and still have two on their schedule.

Defense does win championships and LSU's defense is proving that they can. Expect them to perform well the rest of the season and vault themselves to the National Championship.

3. Les Miles Can Handle Being No. 1

3 of 7

Les Miles has already proved that he can win, but can he do it the rest of 2011?

The Tigers have complete faith in Miles as Miles has complete faith in his players. Creating a bond that works to the betterment of the team. With such a good relationship with players, he can easily ask things of him and they'll do it.

When it comes down to which teams can remain at No. 1. It usually comes down to critical coaching decisions late in games. Les Miles hasn't had to make many of those this year and he will be tested in the upcoming weeks.

Les Miles is a great coach and will be part of the reason LSU runs the table.

4. Predicting Games: At No. 2 Alabama

4 of 7

LSU has demolished ranked opponents recently and yet still will visit Alabama as 8 point underdogs. When asked about what he thought about being the underdog he said, "I love it, I love it, I love it."

The LSU Tigers offense will have trouble finding a footing early against the tough 'Bama defense, but will eventually find a rhythm and score the most points Alabama has allowed this season.

Bama will also struggle against the LSU defense but fail to find a rhythm until it is too late and come up short.

Prediction: LSU 24 Alabama 10

Vs. Western Kentucky and at Ole Miss

5 of 7

Lumping these two games together as easy victories is what it should be. LSU should mightily handle both teams and beat them by a differential of at least 30 points. Both games will allow the backups to get some critical field time before the National Championship.

These two games and getting the backups some field experience could prove crucial in the case of an injury or another suspension. It allows the offense to try somethings out it hasn't done and see if they work or not.

LSU will easily handle these two opponents.

Prediction: LSU 55 WKU 3

Prediction: LSU 45 Ole Miss 10

Vs. No. 10 Arkansas

6 of 7

The last game before the LSU Tigers will move on to the SEC championship game is Arkansas and they will be fired up.

Arkansas is currently No. 10 and has the ninth ranked passing offense in the country. They have a couple of road bumps to get over before playing the top-ranked LSU Tigers but could come in even higher in the rankings if they continue to win.

Once again the LSU defense will prevail over a high powered offense by shutting them down the whole game. They will score a couple times, but nothing the Tigers offense won't counter.

Prediction: LSU 35 Arkansas 17

SEC Championship Game: Predicted vs. South Carolina

7 of 7

Although they've lost star RB Marcus Lattimore they still have a great chance of making it to the SEC Championship to play LSU.

That's where the excitement stops for South Carolina, needing only this win to get to the National Championship, LSU will not stop pouring on the points against South Carolina and this one will be ugly. No need to even watch this one, LSU will demolish South Carolina and run the table and find themselves playing for the title.

Prediction: LSU 55 South Carolina 13
