BCS Rankings: Boise State, Kansas State and Teams Being Overhyped by BCS

Tim DanielsOct 24, 2011

As is the case with any college football poll, certain teams are being given too much credit by the BCS. While it might not seem like a big deal in Week 9, where schools are ranked now will have a lasting impact on the BCS chase in the future. With that in mind, here are three currently overhyped teams.

No. 12 Virginia Tech Hokies

Virginia Tech lost its only game against a ranked team (Clemson) by 20 points and doesn't have another one on its schedule. All three of the most commonly cited polls rank them at No. 15, which means the Hokies ranking is receiving a huge boost from the computers.

A road game against Georgia Tech in a couple weeks will likely decide Virginia Tech's ACC fate and the only way for the Hokies to legitimatize their ranking would be to knock off Clemson in a rematch. Otherwise, they doesn't deserve BCS consideration.

No. 8 Kansas State Wildcats

Kansas State knocked off Baylor, but they have played an otherwise average automatic qualifier schedule. The Wildcats defense has been shaky against good offenses and, outside of Collin Klein and John Hubert, they don't have enough playmakers on offense.

The good news for K-State is that it will get plenty of opportunity to show its worth over the next month. Next weekend's game against Oklahoma is the beginning of a four-game swing against ranked teams, so the ship will either sink or glide into a BCS bowl.

No. 4 Boise State Broncos

Boise State being given too much credit by the BCS? Maybe the system is finally paying the Broncos back for all the heartbreak in recent seasons. That said, it's hard to take them seriously when their only big win came against Georgia.

An undefeated season seems like a distinct possibility, but will it be enough to push the Broncos into the BCS National Championship Game? Not likely. As one-loss teams from major conferences start to pick up other big wins, they'll likely jump over Boise.
