BCS Rankings: 5 Teams That Will Make Biggest Jump in BCS Poll by December

Austin GreenOct 23, 2011

The second BCS poll of the season was just released, and Oklahoma and Wisconsin took major hits in the rankings. However, I expect both to steadily rise back up to the top by December.

Here are five teams that will make major climbs by the end of the regular season.

 1 LSU
 .9702
 2 Alabama .9627
 3 Oklahoma State
 .9240
 4 Boise State
 .8302
 5 Clemson
 .8240
 6 Stanford
 .8124
 7 Oregon .6877
 8 Kansas State
 .6681
 9 Oklahoma .6642
 10 Arkansas .6581
 11 Michigan State
 .538
 12 Virginia Tech
 .534
 13 South Carolina
 .501
 14 Nebraska
 .439
 15 Wisconsin
 .433
 16 Texas A&M
 .428
 17 Houston
 .368
 18 Michigan .342
 19 Penn State
 .307
 20 Texas Tech .201
 21 Arizona State
 .163
 22 Georgia
 .159
 23 Auburn .131
 24 Texas .119
 25 West Virginia
 .073

No. 9 Oklahoma Sooners

1 of 5

Oklahoma lost to Texas Tech 41-38 on Saturday and fell from No. 3 to No. 9 in the rankings.

However, I don't think this completely ruins the Sooners' national title hopes.

No.1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama square off in two weeks, so at least one of them will have a loss as well. And Oklahoma gets a shot at No. 3 Oklahoma State in the last game of the season.

In a weird way, it's almost good that Oklahoma got their loss out of the way this weekend.

Now, if they beat eighth-ranked Kansas State and No. 16 Texas A&M in consecutive weeks, they will climb back into the top five.

If they win out from here, they will finish 12-1 with victories over five ranked teams.

Sounds like a solid championship resume to me.

No. 16 Wisconsin Badgers

2 of 5

The Badgers dropped nine spots after their 37-31 loss to Michigan State, which I think is ridiculous.

They played as bad as they possibly could have in the second quarter, orchestrated a great comeback in the fourth quarter and lost on a fluke Hail Mary as time expired.

I could see knocking them down nine spots if that loss came against UNLV or South Dakota, but it was at the hands of the now-11th ranked Spartans.

The BCS system clearly didn't take into account that the Badgers still have the nation's fifth highest scoring offense (47.4 ppg), sixth toughest defense (13.6 points allowed per game) and eighth best rushing attack (252.1 yards per game).

The Badgers will take this demotion as an insult and destroy the rest of their opponents this season. I fully expect them to be back in the top five by December.

No. 7 Oregon Ducks

3 of 5

The 6-1 Ducks have been crushing teams since their season opening loss to No. 1 LSU.

They've put up at least 41 points in every game since that loss, with their smallest margin of victory being 14.

Oregon plays just one ranked team the rest of the season (No. 6 Stanford), and I expect them to win out.

The Ducks started the season ranked third overall, and I'm predicting them to finish there as well.

No. 17 Houston Cougars

4 of 5

The Cougars won't get much early BCS love because they play a cupcake schedule in the Conference USA. But if they stay undefeated, they will finish the season in the top 10.

Houston has the best passing attack in the nation, averaging 441.7 yards per game. They also lead the country in scoring with 49.3 points per game.

Houston's remaining schedule isn't exactly brutal, as they face Rice, UAB, Tulane, Southern Methodist and Tulsa.

Quarterback Case Keenum will lead his team to an undefeated regular season and, ultimately, a top eight or nine ranking.

No. 21 Arizona State Sun Devils

5 of 5

The 5-2 Sun Devils have registered two victories over ranked opponents, and their only losses are to quality teams in Oregon and Illinois.

ASU has five games left on the season, and I don't expect them to lose again. Teams like Colorado and Arizona aren't exactly scaring anybody.

The Sun Devils have blown out teams in four of their five victories. Look for them to continue dominating inferior competition and rise up the BCS standings.

Arizona State will be ranked in the 10-15 range by the end of the season.
