BCS Standings Week 9: Boise State and 5 Teams Ranked Too High

Brian MaziqueOct 23, 2011

It was inevitable, based on the the preseason ranking, that the Boise State Broncos would be rated too high in the BCS standings. With both Oklahoma and Wisconsin falling in upsets on Saturday, Boise State and Oklahoma State are prime to cement themselves closer to the SEC powerhouses.

In a season that had been status quo up to this point, with no major upsets to Top 10 teams, Week 9 turned the top of the polls on its ear.

The inflated rank tag doesn't really fit Oklahoma State as much as it does Boise St., and even Stanford, my second overrated team. The Cardinal are coming off their only quality win of the year, if you want to call it that.

In their first game against a ranked opponent, the Cardinal won easily over No. 25 Washington. But there just isn't enough on their resume this year to make me believe they deserve to be ranked as high as they are.

The third team that is ranked too high is Kansas State. The Wildcats have had a nice run and they are an exciting team, but they own only one win over a ranked opponent, the since Top 25 departed Baylor Bears.

The overrating will end shortly for the Wildcats. They are about to go through a buzz saw in their schedule. They will have an angry Oklahoma Sooners team next week, then Oklahoma State, followed by Texas A&M and Texas.

If they manage to win two of these games, they will deserve their current spot.

Fourth is Nebraska. They have also only faced one ranked team. That didn't turn out well. They were rudely greeted into the Big Ten as Wisconsin thoroughly outclassed them.

Nebraska will also have the mettle tested this week as they face No. 11 Michigan State.

The fifth and final team enjoying an inflated spot is the Penn State Nittany Lions. They have played only one ranked team and they were outclassed in that game against Alabama, who was No. 3 at the time.

Penn State will have the collapsing Fighting Illini next and then Nebraska.

This is the biggest week of the season in college football. Almost every question will be answered come Sunday morning.
