Ohio State Football: What Will Luke Fickell Need to Do to Keep His Job?

Martha CoppOct 23, 2011

It's over halfway into the season, and Ohio State head coach Luke Fickell has led the Buckeyes to a 4-3 record. He beat undefeated Illinois last week, but blew a 28-6 lead over Nebraska in October.

With details of his contract made public earlier this week, Fickell's contract is set to end on January 31. One question remains: what will Fickell need to do to keep his job?

There are five games remaining in the season, including games against Wisconsin and Michigan. Obviously, Fickell will need to win these crucial matchups in order to renew his contract. In addition, he will need to take the Buckeyes to a reputable bowl game.

But what if Fickell loses to Wisconsin? Does he have a job next year?

There are a few different scenarios to consider:

Record: 9-3, no further losses

Obviously, Fickell will keep his head coaching job. Victories over Wisconsin and Michigan will surely earn him a raise next year.

Record: 8-4, with a loss to Wisconsin or Michigan

If Fickell loses to just one of the archrivals, but manages to beat the other, he should be just fine. Both opponents are worthy foes this year, and a quality win over either means that we will see him on the sidelines again next year.

Record: 7-5, with losses to both Wisconsin and Michigan

This depends on the bowl game that Ohio State gets chosen for. If OSU goes to a solid bowl game (and wins against a good opponent), Fickell should be fine. After all, coach Tressel went 7-5 in his first year with the Buckeyes. The bowl game here will dictate his job, but even then it will be dicey.

Record 6-6, with losses to Wisconsin, Michigan and Penn State

With a 0.500 record and a tepid bowl game invitation, Fickell will not be asked to come back. Clear your calendar, Urban Meyer. Looks like you'll be coming to Columbus.
