BCS Rankings: One-Loss Teams with a Chance to Play for the National Championship

Rob GoldbergOct 23, 2011

In college football, a single loss can remove a team from the BCS National Championship picture. However, there are certain teams that have not been eliminated just yet.

While eight teams are still undefeated, there is still plenty of football left to be played this season. Conference rivals love ruining an opposing team's hopes for a perfect season.

When some of the top-ranked teams eventually fail, a few teams will be there waiting to return to the title discussion.

Oklahoma

Although the Sooners came up short at home last week against Texas Tech, Oklahoma should not give up on the season just yet.

The team will most likely not drop out of the Top 10 in the newest BCS rankings, and there are still plenty of games on the schedule that can impress the voters. Oklahoma travels to undefeated Kansas State next week and needs to come up big.

The Sooners will also travel to Oklahoma State on the last game of the season. If the Cowboys are still undefeated, they will be first or second in the BCS rankings. At that point, a win will get Oklahoma back in the title discussion.

Oregon

Many experts counted Oregon out after the first week of the season. A loss to LSU should have knocked the Ducks out of the race, but since that game, Oregon has continued to take care of business.

They have been blowing teams away, but they still need to travel to Stanford on Nov. 12. If the Ducks can defeat Andrew Luck and company, it will not even need that much help to get themselves into the BCS Championship Game.

Although if it comes down to it, voters might not want to put Oregon in over LSU due to the early-season result.

Arkansas

It sure is tough being in the SEC West. Arkansas might be one of the best teams in the country, but the Razorbacks are currently third in its division standings.

The division standings might actually work in Arkansas' favor if things fall correctly. The team still has LSU on the schedule, so if they beat an undefeated LSU, they will create a three-way tie, Alabama included, for first place in the SEC West.

At this point, voters will have to decide if the wins were impressive enough to bring another SEC team to a title game.

Michigan State

A championship might be hard to come by, but Michigan State proved it is much better than what it showed against Notre Dame earlier in the year.

Consecutive wins over highly ranked teams have shot the Spartans up the rankings into the Top 10 in the Coaches' Poll. Another win against Nebraska would solidify Michigan State's standing.

Unfortunately, the computer polls have not been kind to the Big Ten so far, making it tough for the Spartans to pass enough teams without some help.

With a sport that does not give many chances to make up for mistakes, these teams still have life in the hunt for a championship.
