BCS Standings: Boise State and 2 Other Teams Who Don't Deserve Their Ranking

With the BCS Rankings set to come out on Sunday night, here are a few teams that will be ranked higher than they should be.

South Carolina

South Carolina isn't necessarily being ranked higher than they should be because they are overrated, it’s because of the loss of Stephen Garcia—and more importantly, Marcus Lattimore.

Without Lattimore, this offense will struggle to put up points at a consistent level. Connor Shaw will need to play big-time football to keep South Carolina at their No. 14 ranking. He has thrown for 495 yards and five touchdowns on the season.

Defensively, the Gamecocks are getting better after struggling in the early goings of the season, when they gave up 37 and 42 points in the first two games. It is paramount that the defense continues to play better, because this offense isn’t equipped to put up 30-35 points to win games.

Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech struggled against East Carolina on September 10 and got blown out at home against Clemson, 23-3, on October 1. Frank Beamer teams don’t lose at home to quality opponents. This isn’t the same Beamer team.

They are overrated.

Miami and Wake Forest are their best victories on the season, but that’s not good enough. Those teams are decent, but the Hokies are missing a “statement” game win. They had their chance to post that victory, but looked awful in the process.

However, Virginia Tech sits in a great position because, with the loss of Georgia Tech this week to Miami, they probably won’t face another ranked team on the season.

That would mean that they only played one on the season. That’s not good enough. They haven’t proved to me they are worthy of their No. 12 selection.

Boise State

Boise State is ranked No. 5 in the BCS rankings. Other than Georgia, Boise State has feasted on inferior competition. They have defeated teams like Tulsa, Nevada, Fresno State, Colorado State and Air Force.

That isn’t enough to garner the No. 5 ranking.

I support Boise State because I truly feel they can beat any team in college football in most years—not this year, but the BCS looks closely at who you play. The bottom line is that Boise State doesn’t play the competition that a Big 12 or SEC team does.

They should be penalized for that.
