BCS Rankings: AP Top 25 Teams Who'll Be out of the Polls Soon

Ian HanfordOct 23, 2011

The Week 9 editions of the AP Top 25 and the USA Today Poll have arrived.

Every week constitutes changes among the top teams. Oklahoma fell from No. 3 to No. 11 in the Week 9 AP Top 25. Not all changes are this dramatic, but every small movement means something in college football.

There are five weeks left in the season. Every team will have a chance to shape their own destiny as they continue their path toward a BCS berth.

Surprise teams will cool off, and another powerhouse will, more than likely, falter.

Here are five teams who are not going to be in the Top 25 for much longer.

Georgia Bulldogs

1 of 5

The Georgia Bulldogs are 5-2 after eight weeks of the college football season. That lands the Bulldogs at No. 22 in the AP Top 25.

Georgia coach Mark Richt has done a solid job of making sure his seat doesn't get any hotter than necessary.

In Week 9, Georgia will face Florida in Jacksonville. The Florida-Georgia game is always competitive.

The Bulldogs have bounced back nicely from their Week 1 loss to Boise State. However, Georgia still has work to do.

The Gators will hand the Bulldogs their third loss of the season. Three losses will keep Georgia out of the Top 25 for the time being.

Cincinnati Bearcats

2 of 5

The Cincinnati Bearcats are 6-1 to start the season. The AP Poll has the Bearcats at No. 24. The USA Today poll gives Cincinnati a No. 23 ranking heading into Week 9.

Cincinnati has not played any high-caliber competition. Their best win is against South Florida. Their lone loss came at the hands of the Tennessee Volunteers.

The Bearcats have the luxury of playing in a weak Big East.

However, their next two games are crucial. Matchups against Pittsburgh and West Virginia will not be easy victories by any means.

The Bearcats have had a solid first eight weeks of the season. Before their next two games are over with, Cincinnati will have one more loss and will not be found in the Top 25.

Texas A&M Aggies

3 of 5

Texas A&M is 5-2 through Week 8. The Aggies stand at No. 16 in both the AP and USA Today polls.

The Aggies have bounced back nicely after losing two of their first four contests. Three straight victories have Texas A&M slowly creeping back up to their expected ranking range in the polls.

Despite their recent success, things do not get any easier from here for the boys in College Station.

Their next three games are against Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas State. Depending on the status of other Top 25 teams, losing one of these could drop the Aggies from the rankings.

Losing two of those three matchups would all but guarantee a dramatic drop for Texas A&M, one they may not be able to recover from at this point in the season.

Penn State Nittany Lions

4 of 5

Penn State has put together a relatively quiet 7-1 record so far in 2011. The Nittany Lions are No. 21 in the AP poll and No. 19 in the USA Today poll.

The Nittany Lions were not expected to be contenders in the Leaders division this season. So far, Penn State has proved doubters wrong. After eight weeks, the Nittany Lions are in sole possession of first place.

Penn State's final four contests consist of Illinois, Nebraska, Ohio State and Wisconsin. Despite their surprising success, Penn State is capable of losing any, and all, of these games.

Joe Paterno has his team playing solid football without a reliable quarterback.

The Nittany Lions will not test out well in the heart of their Big Ten schedule. Penn State should be prepared for a rapid fall back to Earth.

USC Trojans

5 of 5

The USC Trojans are currently ranked No. 20 in the AP poll. The Trojans sit at 6-1 after their Week 8 victory over Notre Dame.

USC is certainly not the USC from Pete Carroll's days in The Coliseum. However, the Trojans have managed to stay relevant amid swirling controversies.

The Pac-12 is not all that strong this season. Matchups later in the season against Washington and Oregon will test the Trojans.

In the more recent future, the Trojans will battle Stanford in Week 9.

USC is due for a stumble. Andrew Luck and the Cardinal will provide just enough to knock USC out of the AP poll for Week 10.
