BCS Projections: Wisconsin and Teams Who Will Plummet in New BCS Rankings

Nicholas GossOct 23, 2011

Wisconsin and Oklahoma are two of several top teams who will plummet in the new BCS rankings that will be unveiled Sunday.

The Badgers lost a heartbreaker to Michigan State on a last second Hail Mary pass, and Oklahoma was upset by Texas Tech in a high scoring affair.

Arkansas, West Virginia and Georgia Tech are other teams who also didn't help strengthen their resumes on Saturday.

Losing just one game at any point in the season can really damage your BCS ranking, and sometimes it's extremely difficult to recover from an upset loss.

Let's look at three teams who will plummet in the second edition of the 2011 BCS rankings.

1) West Virginia

The Mountaineers were dominated by Syracuse on Friday, and with the 49-23 loss, West Virginia's BCS dreams are in serious doubt.

They must now win the Big East conference to secure a BCS bowl bid and have no shot at winning the BCS title.

West Virginia's schedule already wasn't too strong, and not that they have one loss, it will be extremely difficult to make up ground in future BCS rankings.

2) Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Badgers BCS title dreams seemed safe until the last play of their heartbreaking upset loss to Michigan State.

A last second Hail Mary pass beat the Badgers on Saturday night and probably destroyed their BCS title hopes too.

The Badgers have played a weak schedule and have few quality teams left to play this year, so they will need a lot of teams ranked ahead of them to lose, while not losing a game the rest of the way themselves.

The best goal Wisconsin can strive for this season is to win the Big Ten conference championship and earn a BCS bowl berth that way.

3) Oklahoma

Oklahoma's 41-38 upset loss to unranked Big 12 opponent Texas Tech was bizarre and unexpected. The Red Raiders really played well and made the Sooners defense look bad at times.

Sooners quarterback Landry Jones did not play well and severely hurt his chances at winning the Heisman Trophy.

Oklahoma was ranked third in the BCS coming into the game and could find themselves near the bottom of the top 10, or outside it altogether when the new BCS standings are unveiled Sunday.

The Sooners now must not lose again and beat No. 4 Oklahoma State on December 3 to have a chance at a BCS title berth.
