BCS Standings: 5 Teams That Will Shake Up the Rankings

Jordan CalfeeOct 23, 2011

With the second BCS Standings arriving tonight, the question on the minds of those whose teams were ranked last week is "where will my team end up tonight?"

For most, the movement will be slight. But for those (like the Oklahoma Sooners) who lost yesterday, or those who picked up huge W's (e.g., the Michigan State Spartans), there will be a huge jump.

Here are the five teams that will move the most in the second BCS rankings of the 2011 college football season.

Wisconsin Badgers

1 of 5

The BCS already showed an aversion to the Wisconsin Badgers last week, ranking them No. 6 despite the Badgers' No. 4 ranking in the human polls.

After the Badgers' heartbreaking last-second loss to the Michigan State Spartans, they will take a tumble in the rankings this week. They will probably drop out of the top 10 in the polls, and thus even further in the BCS rankings. Seems a little harsh when the loss comes in the form of a hail mary, but hey, that's college football.

Oklahoma Sooners

2 of 5

Not only did the Oklahoma Sooners lose yesterday, they lost to a team that wasn't even receiving votes in the Top 25 coming into the week. I can't imagine the pollsters or computers will look too favorably on them after that.

The Sooners came into this week ranked No. 3 before they were stunned by the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Oklahoma had won two big games this year thus far, against the Florida State Seminoles and Texas Longhorns. But Florida State has since fallen apart, and Texas lost their way out of the Top 25 polls last week. Oklahoma could, and should drop out of the Top 10 this week.

Auburn Tigers

3 of 5

After getting smashed by the LSU Tigers yesterday, the Auburn Tigers will certainly drop out of the BCS Top 25 when the second rankings come out tonight.

All season long we have been saying that Auburn is an up-and-down team. This week they're down, and as far as the BCS standings are concerned, out.

West Virginia Mountaineers

4 of 5

After getting steamrolled by the Syracuse Orange on Friday, the formerly No. 15 West Virginia Mountaineers will be the highest ranked team from a week ago to drop out of the rankings when the second BCS standings are released tonight.

Just as they did in the Mountaineers' loss to the LSU Tigers, turnovers killed West Virginia again this week. The Mountaineers have now lost two games on the season, and therefore, as a member of the Big (L)East, deserve to drop all the way out of the top 25.

Michigan State Spartans

5 of 5

Let's end an otherwise negative slideshow on a positive note. One of the few teams that distinguished themselves yesterday as better than we thought they were was the Michigan State Spartans. The Spartans beat a very solid (and what previously looked to be unbeatable) Wisconsin Badgers team this Saturday in epic fashion.

Michigan State came in at No. 16 last week. With this marquee win, the Spartans deserve to be in the top 10. After the three-game stretch Sparty just navigated successfully, we can overlook that loss at Notre Dame.
