Texas Tech Red Raiders Upset Oklahoma Sooners: Meaning of Stunning Victory

Paul WilliamsonOct 23, 2011

The Texas Tech Red Raiders' stunning win against the Oklahoma Sooners is one of the greatest upsets in college football history.

The Red Raiders came into Oklahoma with what seemed virtually no chance at leaving with a win.

Here are a few of the many things Texas Tech had going against them.

Purdue v Virginia Tech
Northwestern v Penn State

1. They were in Norman, Okla. Everyone knows how tough the Sooners are there. Before Saturday night, OU had only lost in Norman once since 2001.

2. Tech has a young team. The defense for the Raiders is comprised of freshmen and sophomores. They were facing an offense featuring (former) Heisman hopeful QB Landry Jones and a laundry list of four- and five-star players at the skill positions.

The offense has a first-year starter at QB in Seth Doege and very little experience surrounding him.

3. Texas Tech was playing without arguably their best offensive weapon in RB Eric Stephens for a second straight week.

This means Tech had to rely on freshman RB DeAndre Washington to carry the rushing attack for the Red Raiders.

This list could go on and on.

What Texas Tech did was nothing short of great.

The Red Raiders had no business beating an Oklahoma Sooners team that had title ambitions.

Especially in Norman.

Tech went into this game with a fanbase that had the wind knocked out of them with two straight home losses.

Those losses had Tech fans scrambling to look at the schedule to find the additional two wins on the schedule to get Tech to bowl eligibility.

Now, the fans can breathe a little easier.

This game does kill any chance Oklahoma has at going to a national title game and kills QB Landry Jones' Heisman hopes.

Oklahoma now has to go to Kansas State next week and try and bounce back.

They also still have road dates with Baylor and Oklahoma State. Neither of those games are stone-cold locks by any means.

The upset gives the rest of the Big 12 hope and completely opens the field for a one-loss team like Texas A&M to get right back into the Big 12 title race.

This game also gives Texas Tech a very good chance at landing a significant bowl appearance, and maybe even an outside chance at winning the Big 12.

Football is a game of momentum, and Tech has it all.
