BCS Rankings: How Far Will Boise State Drop in Week 9?

Austin GreenOct 22, 2011

The Boise State Broncos improved to 7-0 on Saturday, but I expect them to fall a few spots when the second BCS poll is released on Sunday.

The Broncos were solid, but not spectacular, in their 37-26 victory over Air Force. Kellen Moore was his usual phenomenal self, completing 23-of-29 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns. He threw an interception, but it was only his fifth of the season.

Unfortunately for Boise State, their strength of schedule will screw them over like usual.

They've moved over to the Mountain West Conference, but they will still fall behind teams that play more rigorous schedules in the Big Ten, Pac-12 and ACC.

There are three teams that could pass up Boise State in the next BCS poll.

No. 6 Wisconsin Badgers

The Badgers have been straight up spanking teams this season.

They lead the nation in points per game (50.2) and are third in points allowed per game (9.7). The calculator on my computer tells me that means their average margin of victory is 40.5 points per game, which is just absurd.

They've only faced one ranked team this season, when they embarrassed then-eighth-ranked Nebraska, 48-17.

Today, they get their second shot at a ranked conference opponent. They travel to East Lansing to take on No. 16 Michigan State. If the Badgers beat down the Spartans, they will certainly move ahead of Boise State.

No. 7 Clemson Tigers

Clemson also improved to 7-0 tonight after putting up 59 points on North Carolina, their second straight game going over the half-century mark. Last week they scored 56 on Maryland.

Their defense has been a bit shaky, but there's no denying the talent Clemson possesses. They've beat three ranked teams already this season.

Sophomore quarterback Tajh Boyd has been incredible, throwing for 2,012 yards, 19 touchdowns and just three interceptions on the season.

The Tigers will likely leapfrog the Broncos on Sunday.

No. 8 Stanford Cardinal

I doubt Stanford will overtake Boise State in this week's poll, because their schedule has been just as weak.

Tonight the Cardinal take on their first ranked opponent, No. 25 Washington.

I expect Andrew Luck to lead his team to victory, but it will be another week or two before they pass up the Broncos.

But if they have strong showings against USC, Oregon and Notre Dame, Stanford will be ranked higher by the end of the season.
