Case Keenum: Why Newest NCAA All-Time Offensive Leader Is Under-Valued

Andrew KulhaOct 22, 2011

Sadly enough, only a diehard college football fan would be able to tell you who Case Keenum is, but the truth of the matter is that everybody in the nation should know his name.

Maybe it's a small overstatement to say that everybody should know his name, but considering his accomplishments as the quarterback of the Houston Cougars and his overall place in NCAA athletics I believe the least we can do is recognize the guy.

Houston football is known for its incredible offensive prowess, and for the past few years it has been Keenum running the show from under center.

As the senior quarterback this year, Keenum has quietly been a juggernaut.

Coming into this matchup with Marshall Keenum had thrown for 2,309 yards and 17 touchdowns, including three 400-yard plus games.

With the stats that he put up against Marshall, Keenum hit a huge career mark and set an NCAA record. Sam Khan Jr. of the Houston Chronicle reports more on Keenum's record-setting day:

"

Houston Cougars senior quarterback Case Keenum is now the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision all-time leader career total offense.

Keenum needed 130 yards to eclipse the mark, previously held by Hawaii's Timmy Chang (16,910). The sixth-year senior threw for 171 yards in the first quarter of UH's homecoming game against Marshall on Saturday. Keenum was 12-of-14 passing with two touchdown passes in the first quarter and stood at 16,952 career offensive yards through the first quarter of play.

"

It's important to note that the offensive yardage also accounts for running plays, so don't let that fool you.

Keenum had a total of 886 rushing yards in his career that added to his total and put him over the record with his performance in the first quarter.

It's simple, this is an amazing accomplishment from a truly great college football player, but where is all the fanfare?

I'm not sure what the first story will be when you turn on your local sports channel, but I have a feeling it's not going to be about Keenum setting this unbelievable mark.

Sure they'll get him on there and congratulations will be given, but all-in-all Keenum's accomplishment is going to be under-valued and under-appreciated.

If you've taken the time to read this then I urge you to take a moment to truly appreciate the accomplishment that took place today.

I dare say it won't happen again for a while.
