Gunner Kiel Recruiting: Will Prep QB Be a Bust or Superstar at the Next Level?

Michael DixonJun 2, 2018

If he's doing nothing else, Gunner Kiel is putting a giant bullseye on his back. He's also bringing a lot of hype and probably unfair, unrealistic expectations onto himself.

Kiel, a five-star quarterback, had initially committed to the low profile Indiana Hoosiers. Now, he's backed off of that commitment. According to the Indianapolis Stars's Kyle Neddenriep, Kiel is looking at other schools, including Notre Dame.

So, wherever he ends up, will he be a bust, or a star? Well, where he ends up will go a long way in answering that question. But you can take a look at his makeup and make some determinations for yourself.

Personally, while I like his size and the fact that he moves around well, I can't say that I am completely convinced he'll go somewhere and be a star.

His throwing motion still looks a little off and his size and speed won't look anywhere near as impressive when he's up against big name, NCAA opponents.

Now, I am not necessarily guaranteeing that he'll be a bust, but keep something in mind. Indiana isn't exactly known for its vast collection of star high school football players. Yes, they have produced some good ones over the years, but basketball is certainly the focus there.

So, should we be too impressed by someone dominating there? Someone dominating in a place like Los Angeles, Miami or Texas is likely doing so against much stiffer competition.

If I had to take a stab at what kind of career he'll have right now, I would say middle of the road. There will certainly be times where he looks like a five-star recruit. Still, I am seeing absolutely nothing that makes me think that he'll be one of the best of all-time.

What will be the result of him backing away from Indiana? Well, he'll probably put himself on a team with much more talent around him. From that end, it's a good move.

But the extra attention he drew to himself isn't going to be good for anyone.
