LSU Football: Will Jarrett Lee Remain the Starting Quarterback All Season Long?

Danny FlynnOct 22, 2011

The Jordan Jefferson-Jarrett Lee two-quarterback system has been working very well so far since Jefferson returned from a suspension back in Week 5 against Kentucky.

Although the Tigers only rank 97th in the country in passing, averaging just 178 yards per game, the offense has still remained efficient.

LSU ranks 20th in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 38 points per game, and the Tigers have only had one pass picked off all season long.

While the offense has been consistent, it hasn’t exactly been explosive, especially with the lack of a passing attack.

The Tigers are averaging 369 yards per game, which is good for seventh-best in the SEC.

So far, starting quarterback Jarrett Lee has been as good as anybody could have hoped. Lee has completed 61 percent of his passes for over 1,000 yards and hit 10 touchdown strikes. However, you can tell the offensive staff has been guarded with him.

LSU has only thrown the ball 150 times in seven games (21.4 attempts per game).

Now, true, because they’ve been beating up on teams, the Tigers haven’t needed to throw the ball all that much, but eventually, a diversified offense will be needed in the second half of the year against teams like Alabama and Arkansas.

If Lee struggles to remain consistent in the passing game, you have to wonder if LSU would turn to Jordan Jefferson.

Jefferson was shaky as a passer last season, hitting just 56 percent of his passes and tossing 10 interceptions, but he hasn’t been given a chance to show if all that talk about him making strides in the spring was actually true or not.

At this point, it doesn’t seem likely that Lee will give way to Jefferson, but it’s at least something to keep in mind for the second half of the season as the Tigers look to make a run to the national championship game.
