USC vs. Notre Dame: Will Brian Kelly or Lane Kiffin Keep Job Longer?
Two of the giants of college football hired new coaches two years ago for two drastically different reasons.
For USC, Pete Carroll moved on to the NFL. Notre Dame had to fire Charlie Weis.
Their replacements, Lane Kiffin and Brian Kelly, have so far done decent jobs at their respective schools but both have fallen flat of expectations.
The Trojans are 5-1 but were demolished by Arizona State and have been really dreadful against the pass.
The Irish started the season 0-2 and have turned the ball over more than 103 teams in the country.
Neither are really on the hot seat now but if they don’t start improving, both coaches could be on their way out.
But the odds are squarely with Kiffin getting axed first.
Irish fans love Kelly and Kelly loves them. After their 0-2 start, Notre Dame has gone on a four-game winning streak where they held three of their opponents to 13 or less points.
Kiffin can’t seem to keep himself out of the public eye—but for all the wrong reasons. Marc Tyler was taped by TMZ.com saying all of the players are “breakin’ bread,” Kiffin just called out Jim Harbaugh in "Handshake Gate" for absolutely no reason and his father Monte doesn’t seem capable of defending against the pass.
The Trojans are giving up 271 yards per game through the air which ranks 105th in the country and in the pass-happy Pac-12, that number won’t win you any championships, especially with teams like Oregon, Stanford and Arizona State on the rise.
They always produce great NFL talent but under Pete Carroll that also meant wins and conference championships.
If the fans don’t start seeing that soon, Kiffin will be out the door.
