BCS Rankings 2011: Clemson, Kansas State and Unbeaten Teams That Will Be Exposed
The BCS is certainly responsible for over-inflating some of college football's best programs balloons. After all, teams like Texas A&M and Auburn both sit inside the top 20 despite having two losses each.
Playing in the Big 12 or SEC will always score teams extra brownie points, and big blowout wins will continue to add helium to BCS heavyweights' resumes so that they may float to the top of the championship standings.
With that concept in mind, here are three undefeated BCS favorites who are sure to stumble in the coming weeks:
No. 4 Oklahoma State (6-0)
Despite blowing up scoreboards week-in and week-out, the Cowboys defense has been burnt time and time again in 2011.
Offense wins football games, but defense wins championships, and unfortunately for No. 4 Oklahoma State, allowing 33 and 34 points to Tulsa and Louisiana Lafayette respectively is a bad sign.
Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon are the real deal, don't get me wrong, but a December 3 matchup with rival No. 3 Oklahoma will no doubt be the ultimate test for the nation's second-ranked pass attack and scoring offense.
If the Cowboys can escape a November 5 meeting with No. 11 Kansas State, they could easily be the most overrated 11-0 team in the country given their disappointing schedule.
No. 7 Clemson Tigers (7-0)
The Tigers narrowly avoided a road loss to the struggling Maryland Terrapins last week in College Park, squeaking out a 56-45 win behind 21 fourth-quarter points.
The close win was enough to help Clemson leap the Stanford Cardinal in the season's first BCS standings, and it keeps the overrated Tigers undefeated headed into a monumental October 29 matchup in Atlanta against ACC rival Georgia Tech.
The Yellow Jackets boast the nation's best running game and have already had their BCS balloon popped by the Virginia Cavaliers.
If Clemson doesn't slip up in that game, they will face added pressure to remain unbeaten at South Carolina in their regular season finale.
No. 11 Kansas State (6-0)
Although the undefeated Wildcats are ranked behind two one-loss teams in the current BCS, they are rather high for having only knocked off one ranked team all season.
Kansas State's win over Robert Griffin III and Baylor a few weeks ago boosted their BCS resume and now has them set up for guaranteed failure as they head into a hellacious stretch of Big 12 matchups starting October 29 against No. 3 Oklahoma.
After that game, the Wildcats face No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 17 Texas A&M and No. 24 Texas in consecutive weeks.
The Wildcats would be lucky to finish 2011 at 8-3.
