Report: Sources Say West Virginia Could Replace Missouri in the Big 12

Danny FlynnOct 20, 2011

According to PowerMizzou.com, it sounds as if Missouri’s rumored move to the SEC could be imminent and, if the Tigers get the votes needed to join the conference, that means the Big 12 will be down to just nine member schools, with the addition of TCU before the start of next season.

If that happens, you would certainly have to expect that Big 12 officials will be looking to add more schools and continue to strengthen the league and add depth.

One of their top targets could be West Virginia out of the Big East.

In a recent New York Post report, the indication is that the Big 12 would likely target West Virginia and Louisville out of the Big East and BYU, who currently is in its first year of independence, if the conference loses Missouri to the SEC.

From a geographic standpoint, the move wouldn’t exactly be a perfect fit for West Virginia, given that Morgantown is roughly about 1,000 miles from Texas. But desperate times call for desperate measures, and the Mountaineers could be desperate to get out of the fledgling Big East. The Big 12 will also be desperate to add notable programs to the conference if it loses its fourth defection in just a year.

While nothing is close to official as of now, it is certainly an interesting idea to chew on during these crazy times of college football expansion.

Here’s a look at five reasons that a West Virginia move to the Big 12 would be great for the Mountaineers : http://bleacherreport.com/articles/903446-west-virginia-to-the-big-12-5-reasons-it-would-be-great-for-the-mountaineers
