MLB World Series Schedule 2011: Game 1 Is Must Win for Texas Rangers
Believe it or not, if the Rangers lose Game 1 tonight in the opening match of their best-of-seven series against the National League Champions, the St. Louis Cardinals, they might as well cancel any future championship parades in the city of Arlington.
Now, the Rangers will not pack it up and head back to Texas if they happen to lose Game 1 tonight, but six of the last seven and 11 of the last 13 World Series champions have won Game 1.
Historically in the World Series, the team that wins Game 1 has gone on to win the World Series 61 percent of the time.

Plus, in a short sample size of a series, as seven games are, a team like the Rangers cannot afford to drop the first game. One loss, and they’re three away from destroying another great run in the postseason.
However, this year’s Texas Rangers have the experience of having already played in the World Series—something that this team lacked when they were beaten in five games by the San Francisco Giants.
Last year, when the Rangers had their “ace” of the pitching staff, Cliff Lee, opening up in Game 1 against the Giants, the Rangers came out flat, losing to San Francisco, 11-7.
After that Game 1 loss on the road, the Rangers could not find any momentum, losing Game 2 and sending the Rangers home for games three and four down 0-2, eventually losing the series in the fifth game.
Tonight, they have a chance to make up for their shortcomings last year.
Thankfully, this Rangers team, comprised of most of the same players from last year’s World Series team, understands the importance of Game 1.
This year, the Rangers’ new “ace” of their staff, C.J. Wilson, gets the ball to open the World Series.
Wilson led this Rangers pitching staff to the American League West Division title with a command and poise every time he took the mound. However, during the postseason, he hasn’t been as dominant in his starts.
But, Wilson has been picked up by his offense, as the Rangers rank first in the AL in offensive categories for this postseason.
Tonight opens up the 2011 World Series. It’s between two of the best teams in baseball and will give fans memorable games to watch, both on television and at the ball park.
Just remember, Rangers fans: If you don’t win Game 1 tonight, the season isn’t over—but the odds are very much against you.
