BCS Rankings 2011: 5 Teams That Could Go Undefeated This Year

Antonio BonkalskiOct 18, 2011

With the first look at the BCS rankings, 10 teams remain unbeaten, with all the top-eight teams sitting without a loss.

This year may bring some trouble to the computers ranking the teams, as many of the 10 teams have a chance at going undefeated.

With some matchups that will shake the standings in the coming weeks (LSU versus Alabama, Oklahoma versus Oklahoma State), some teams will fall. But other teams ranked in the top eight control their own destiny and have a good chance at going undefeated.

Here are five teams that have a very good chance at going undefeated.

Boise State Broncos

1 of 5

In recent years, the Boise State Broncos have always had a good chance of going undefeated. This year is no different.

Sitting at No. 5 in the rankings, Boise State control its own fate.

Their schedule is arguably the easiest out of the remaining unbeaten teams, as they are a powerhouse in the Mountain West.

The only "competition" the Broncos have faced this season was Week One versus the then-No. 19 Georgia Bulldogs.

Boise State is in cruise control for the rest of the season, and the only upset that can be foreseen to knock the Broncos off the rankings would be facing TCU in mid-November.

If the Broncos can overcome TCU, they should not have a problem going undefeated in the weak Mountain West Conference.

Wisconsin Badgers

2 of 5

The Wisconsin Badgers sit right under the Broncos at No. 6 in the BCS rankings.

The Badgers have already proved that they are a force to be reckoned with and have taken care of business so far this season.

The Badgers already got past the toughest competition they would have to face this season in the No. 8 Nebraska Cornhuskers. Not only did they beat Nebraska, but they did it in a dominating fashion.

Now Wisconsin has to face tough teams like Michigan State this week, and Illinois and Penn State in the last two games of their season.

Though they face some tough teams in their remaining schedule, they have proven they can dominate anyone they play, and with an offense ranked No.1 in points scored with 50.2, they control their own destiny.

Clemson Tigers

3 of 5

The No. 7 Clemson Tigers are one of the most surprising top-10 teams this year.

Sitting atop the ACC, the Tigers have already faced the most brutal of their schedule, with back-to-back-to-back games against Auburn, Florida State and Virginia Tech.

They survived the three-week span and now only have to face two teams that are potential upsets against the Tigers.

The first is Georgia Tech. They were undefeated as well before losing to a much weaker Virginia team. This shows that they are in fact beatable, and with the balanced offensive and defensive play of the Tigers, Georgia Tech has only a slim chance of defeating them.

The second team is South Carolina, the last team Clemson faces this season. The Gamecocks would be a really tough game and even match for the Tigers, but a few things have changed for the Gamecocks.

After releasing quarterback Stephen Garcia from the team and losing arguably their best player in running back Marcus Lattimore, the Gamecocks do not have the firepower they need to beat the Tigers later in the year.

Stanford Cardinal

4 of 5

When Andrew Luck is in charge of your offense, you always have a chance at going undefeated.

The Stanford Cardinal sits at No. 8 in the rankings and has yet to face their toughest competition.

The Cardinal are ranked fifth in both points for and points against in the FBS, but their toughest Pac-12 competition is coming.

Three teams can put the Cardinal out of the championship hunt, and the first comes this week.

No. 25 Washington comes to Stanford this week with an impressive season so far, but when facing Andrew Luck, their shot at beating a ranked team is unlikely.

The biggest test of the season may come in facing No. 10 Oregon later. Both teams are stacked offensively, and the Cardinal will have their hands full on defense trying to stop the Ducks. However, Luck has a very good chance at moving the Stanford offense up and down the field with ease.

Look for a shootout, but the winner could be the team that has "Luck" on their side.

The final test will be Notre Dame, who have finally found their identity and are beginning to win some tough games. If Stanford can defeat the Irish, they can achieve the undefeated record.

Houston Cougars

5 of 5

The No. 19 Houston Cougars have a very, very good chance at going undefeated this year.

They play in the lackluster Conference USA and are taking care of business as usual, with quarterback Case Keenum leading the offense.

The only reason why the team is not ranked higher is because of its easy schedule.

They do not face any team that could be an upset, but they just cannot be considered a championship-caliber team with the opponents they face.

Look for the Cougars to go undefeated, but don't expect them to be in the championship hunt.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Every team that was mentioned has a chance to go undefeated, but the top-four teams in the nation have the greatest shot of making it into the championship game.

The LSU Tigers will face the Alabama Crimson Tide in the coming weeks, and the winner of that game will most likely find its way into the championship.

The same can be said about the winner of the Oklahoma versus Oklahoma State game. Whoever wins will be in position to reach the championship.

The fact is that several teams could go undefeated, so the BCS will have a lot of trouble deciding where to rank teams at the end of the season.
