Missouri SEC Expansion Idea Makes Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban Bristle

Ryan RudnanskyOct 18, 2011

The Missouri Tigers appear to be ready to join the SEC as quickly as possible, and Alabama head coach Nick Saban apparently wants nothing to do with it.

When addressing the media on Monday, Saban was focused on Alabama's upcoming game against rival Tennessee.

But to Saban's despair, all the media wanted to talk about is reports that Missouri may be headed to the SEC and hypotheticals that Tennessee may be headed out in college football's ever-changing landscape.

Saban wasn't too happy about the discussion, to say the least.

Said Saban to reporters, via Sporting News:

"

“You all create so many problems. I hate to start on this, but whether guys are going out for the draft that shouldn’t even be thinking about that right now. Whether we’re worrying about the Heisman Trophy, now we’re worrying about playing Missouri rather than Tennessee some time down the road. I could give a (expletive) about all that, excuse my French.

“I mean, come on. Let’s talk about the game. What year are we talking about when we’re not gonna play Tennessee—2025? I’m just hoping I can still go to to the lake then, still can walk around and go on a pontoon boat ride.”

"

Of course, just like how Alabama closes games, Saban closed his diatribe in style. Pontoon boat rides? Really? Now all he did was get reporters to imagine him Photoshopped on a pontoon boat ride.

I can understand why Saban is upset. He focuses on one thing and one thing only, and that's the next opponent. Well, I guess he thinks about pontoon boat rides, as well. But he also has to understand that college football's landscape is changing, and that's really a big deal.

The landscape has changed before, but never to this extent or this quickly. It's amazing how quickly things are beginning to shift, how superconferences are likely going to be common moving forward.

The Big 12's lack of structure has created a ripple effect, and Missouri's move to the SEC would not only hurt the Big 12, but the needy Big East, as well.

The ironic thing about all of this is that Saban's Crimson Tide are No. 2 in the nation right now. Why is he so riled up? I can't imagine it's because he's worried about Missouri joining the conference.

My advice to Saban?

Relax. There's no use to speak in French. The rest of the media will be doing that while they figure out what is going on in college football.
