New York Jets: Winners and Losers from Monday Night Showdown with Dolphins
The New York Jets came into Week 6 with a must-win situation on their hands. Luckily, their game was against the 0-4 Dolphins.
The Jets may have gotten a gift this week considering their next three games are against the Chargers, Bills and Patriots.
It wasn't a pretty win, but a win nonetheless.
So after a big win for New York, here are 10 winners and losers from the Jets' win over the Dolphins, 24-6, on Monday Night Football.
Winner: Mark Sanchez
1 of 10The first quarter of this game was downright scary, but Mark Sanchez recovered, getting a ton of time in the pocket to make decisions.
Sanchez had a solid game, throwing for 201 yards and a touchdown without surrendering an interception. He also ran one in on a quarterback draw.
The interceptions are important because after throwing at least one in his first four games, Sanchez hasn't thrown one in his last two.
It's important for Sanchez to make good decisions and keep the ball in his offense's hands. He did just that in the Jets' win over the Dolphins.
It wasn't the explosive performance that will silence his critics, but it got the job done in Week 6.
Loser: Shonn Greene
2 of 10The Jets' offense is built around a young quarterback and a strong rushing attack. Apparently, Shonn Greene hasn't gotten that memo.
Blame the offensive line all you want, Shonn Greene hasn't produced much since becoming the Jets' No. 1 back.
Another bad performance for Greene with 21 rushes for 74 yards. Those numbers are good enough for 3.5 yards per carry.
On top of that, a lot of Greene's yards were picked up in garbage time when the Jets were running the game clock down.
Greene never breaks big runs to give his team a boost and as compared to LaDainian Tomlinson, it appears he moves in slow motion.
Loser: Tony Sparano
3 of 10With every week that passes, Tony Sparano becomes more likely to be the former Miami Dolphins head coach.
After Dolphins management didn't get the guy they wanted, Jim Harbaugh, they were almost stuck with Sparano.
Now with another embarrassing showing, this time against the New York Jets, the Dolphins still look lost on the field.
Five games into the season, nothing has gone right and Sparano will be the first victim of Miami's ineptitude. It's just a matter of when.
Winner: Santonio Holmes
4 of 10After weeks of nothing but talking trash about his O-line, Santonio Holmes finally put his money where his mouth is and produced for the Jets.
It wasn't much, but Holmes had three catches for 63 yards and a touchdown in the Jets' win.
Holmes has been one of several players who have had problems behind the scenes during the past few weeks, but that didn't stop him from actually doing his job.
The Jets will need more from their top receiver, and a game like this is a nice start. It could spring Holmes towards having a good rest of the season.
Loser: Dolphins Pass Rush
5 of 10It looked like a Monday Night practice session for Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, who had all the time in the world to choose a receiver to throw to.
After a very slow start, the Jets passing game recovered because the Dolphins could get no penetration.
That's not even to say that the Dolphins secondary was all that bad. They could only hold their receivers down for so long until eventually Sanchez found them.
The Dolphins defensive line was nowhere to be found behind the line of scrimmage and Sanchez had no problem picking Miami apart because of it.
Loser: Matt Moore
6 of 10Poor Matt Moore.
It looked like the young quarterback would get a second chance after failing with the Panthers.
With Chad Henne going down to injury, Moore had to step in and try to lead the Dolphins back to respectability. He didn't have too bad a game last week, but against the Jets, he was pitiful.
Moore made the Dolphins look even less competitive than they already did at 0-4. Sloppy throws, fumbles and interceptions are helping make Matt Moore's days numbered in Miami.
Winner: Darrelle Revis
7 of 10Coming into the game against the Dolphins, the Jets' star cornerback Darrelle Revis had only allowed five completions this season.
He didn't keep that up in Week 6, but he did have two interceptions against an erratic Matt Moore. Revis returned one of his picks for 100 yards all the way to the house.
Before the interception, the Jets were looking at the prospect of the Dolphins in the red zone and possibly being down 10-0. It was certainly a major turning point in the game.
Revis saw more action than he had this entire season so far and with two interceptions, showed people what he can do when you throw the ball his way.
Loser: Dolphins Red-Zone Offense
8 of 10The Dolphins certainly had their chances to score in this game but were unable to get into the end zone once.
Miami was 0-for-3 in the red zone, and one of those trips was ended abruptly by a Darrelle Revis interception in the end zone that he took back for a touchdown.
If you want to know why the Dolphins are 0-5, just look at their red-zone numbers, and you'll have all the answers you'll need.
Winner: Jets Defense
9 of 10The Jets defense pounded Matt Moore and the Dolphins on Monday Night Football.
Gang Green had two interceptions, one for a touchdown, as well as four sacks.
When it looked like the offense was going to have a bad night, the Jets' defense stepped up and changed the outlook of the game.
They didn't allow a single touchdown all night and had the game you'd expect them to have against the Dolphins.
Winner: Rex Ryan
10 of 10The seat under Rex Ryan's big posterior was beginning to get hot, but he might have fended off that talk for another week.
The Jets came into this season with Super Bowl expectations again, so it's a huge let down that they came into this game 2-3.
They did what they needed to against the Dolphins, which shouldn't be difficult for anyone.
The passing and rushing attacks worked, although it wasn't pretty and the Jets picked up the win before a tough three-game stint against the Chargers, Bills and Patriots.
He may have silenced his critics this week, but he's got a lot more to do if he wants to shut them up for good.
