Top Ten Reasons For College Football to Adopt Bowls Plus One

Tim ConnorsDec 6, 2008

Everyone knows the BCS is broken.  And playoffs cause too much complexity to get adopted anytime soon.   Bowls Plus One is the answer.

Top Ten reasons we should go to Bowls Plus One in 2009:

10. It is fair.  Let the two teams who are ranked 1 and 2 after the bowls play a championship game.   USC, Texas, Texas Tech, Florida, Alabama, Boise State, etc would still all be in contention.

9. It respects tradition.  Big Ten and Pac Ten still get to play in the rose bowl.  SEC winner in the Sugar Bowl, etc.

8. It is good for TV.  Television pays the bills.  Rather than just one bowl game getting good ratings, January 1 can return to being a monster tv ratings day and the national championship game a week later will get monster ratings too like it does now.

7. It is good for the bowl venues.  January 1 bowls allow folks to take their families as folks are still on vacation and the kids aren't back in school yet.  More fans can travel, more sold tickets, more hotel rooms filled.

6. It is more exciting.  Going into bowl season there will be 5-10 teams who think that if things break just right, they might still win the national championship.  More of those fans will watch the games on tv, and more will travel to the bowl cities.

5. It is good for the college presidents.  One extra game for just two teams wouldn't disrupt the academics.  And the incremental revenue from increased tv ratings will be welcomed in this time when endowments are down.

4. It is simple to adopt now.  Only change is for the bowls to be on jan 1 vs a few days later.  One bowl city needs to plan for a second game a week later.  Simple.

3. It is good for student athletes.  For those schools who still pay attention to the student in student athlete, there is no disruption during finals week and the season extends just one extra week for two teams.  Nobody goes to class during the first week anyway.

2. Kirk Herbstreit likes it.  The smartest analyst in college football knows his stuff and agrees it is the answer.

And the No. 1 reason....

1. Obama has declared 2009 the year of Change.  Let's have change in college football too!
