Carson Palmer Raiders Rumors: Bengals QB Would Make Oakland Super Bowl Contender

Donald WoodOct 17, 2011

The Oakland Raiders are in trouble, and for once it has nothing to do with being far out of first place. This has to do with playoff prospects.

Oddly enough, Carson Palmer could be the answer to Oakland’s prayers.

Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell broke his collarbone in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns, and the team doesn’t feel very confident in backup Kyle Boller.

With Oakland 4-2 so far this season and having the perfect run game and defense for a sustained playoff run, the idea of using the approaching deadline to get a quarterback is one that has rumors flying.

David Garrard and many other veterans sitting at home right now are awaiting patiently the phone call for a tryout, but according to Yahoo Sports, the main phone call the Raiders are making is to the Cincinnati Bengals.

With the trade deadline set for Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, the Oakland Raiders are making a push to acquire embattled quarterback Carson Palmer from the team that has previously flat out refused to trade him.

This may be a long shot for the Raiders, but if they can persuade the Bengals the way the team persuaded Richard Seymour from the New England Patriots, we may see Carson Palmer donning the silver and black instead of stripes by next week.

Jason Campbell was playing solid football for the Raiders this season, but he was managing the game more than actually leading his team to victories. With just six touchdowns through his first six games, there was much left to be desired from the QB position.

While Campbell was on pace for mediocre numbers, imagine the kind of numbers Carson Palmer could put up behind the same offensive line with the run game the Raiders have now.

Palmer would utilize superior running back Darren McFadden in the pass game and capitalize on the speed of his wide receivers to the tune of over 2,500 yards and 18 touchdowns over his last ten games with a brand new team (estimations were made without knowing if Palmer got lazy during retirement or is still in shape).

Not only would Palmer be head and shoulders better than Campbell, he is the kind of player you can build a three or four-year plan around. The Raiders would be smart to make this move.

Let’s just see if Cincinnati even listens to the offer.
