BCS Rankings 2011: Why Boise State Deserves No. 1 Spot in BCS Polls

Donald WoodOct 17, 2011

The Boise State Broncos are the best team in the nation, and the fact that they sit in the No. 5 spot overall in the BCS rankings shows the lack of understanding by the BCS computers and the people in charge of college football.

While the nation’s love affair with the SEC continues to be an unabashed bias for one conference over another purely based on money, Boise State has maintained a level of superiority unseen by any of the bigger programs higher in the standings.

For those naysayers who talk about the lack of competition for the Broncos, there have been and will be solid teams on the schedule, and a team can’t be held responsible for the lack of talent the other teams in its conference recruit.

Boise State has built the eighth-best defense in the country in terms of points allowed with just 14.5, while maintaining the seventh-ranked offense in the nation with a point-per-game average of over 44 points.

Not only can the Broncos pass all over teams with field general Kellen Moore, it is also the newly balanced run game, which boasts 16 rushing touchdowns, that makes the team the far-and-above best team in the nation.

There is no doubt that LSU and Alabama have stellar defenses, but the over-inflation of egos in the SEC makes that conference seem much tougher than it really is.

There are as many mediocre teams in the SEC as in any other conference in the nation, and the thought that just because a team hails from the SEC it deserves the top spot in the BCS rankings is a joke.

It’s all about the money.

Even the Oklahoma Sooners have more of a claim to the No. 1 spot than LSU or Alabama because they started the season at No. 1 and haven’t lost a game, but Sooner Nation should be looking up at Boise State as well.

While it’s blatantly obvious that the BCS and college football in general won’t respect the most talented team in the nation, Boise State can win out and force its way into one of the premier bowls.

It will be in this top-tier bowl game that the Broncos can put their excellence on display and show the nation why they were fools not to give Boise State the respect it deserves.

If Boise State was to play any of the four teams ahead of it in the standings on a neutral field with all of the pressure of a BCS championship on the line, not only would Boise State win, it would mop up with whoever the overrated opponent happened to be.
