Utes' Ugly Win at Pitt Beats a Beautiful Loss
Yesterday morning I was following the Utah @ Pittsburgh game. As I followed in the first quarter and Pitt returned a kickoff for a touchdown, and then blocked a Utah punt for another touchdown, I thought to myself, how can I continue to follow my Utes committing game suicide?
So I took a break, listened to some self help audio books, meditated, and then turned the game back on.
Down 14-3 to Pitt during the first quarter and then the comeback! The Utes intercepted a Pitt pass and then battled back.
It was not a beautiful battle, but the defense carried the day. The offense did not turn over the ball like they have the past two weeks against Washington and Arizona State, though Jon Hays was sacked seven times. Hays did complete a 33 yard touchdown pass to Luke Matthews and Kicker Coleman Petersen connected on four field goals.
Other than that it was Pitt turning the ball over and Utah's defense capitalizing. Final score Utah 26, Pitt 14. The defense shined for the most part, but the offense continued to play the part of ugly red headed step-child.
But an ugly win beats a beautiful loss any day of the week, and the Utes needed this "W" in the plus column. And Utah will take it.
Next week Utah is at California and will need to have a good game, even though Cal is having woes of its own. If the Utes pull off a win at Cal, in San Francisco, then things are in gear again for a successful season.
Utah will try for its first Pac-12 win ever, while Cal will try for its first conference win of the year. Next week will be a test, but it is a test the Utes are more than capable of passing, even if the win may be ugly.
