BCS Rankings 2011: 5 Biggest Snubs in the First BCS Ranking
The BCS rankings were released by ESPN this evening, and while the poll got a lot right, it also snubbed a few teams.
The LSU Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys and Boise State Broncos rounded out the Top 5, which leads me to ask where’s Wisconsin?
Now, I know that they haven’t had a tough non-conference schedule, but you can’t discredit what this team has been able to do.
They rank first in the nation in points scored, and they rank third in college football in points allowed.
And if you want to throw the look at their schedule argument in my face, all I have to say is look at Boise State’s schedule.
Their biggest win came against Georgia when they won by two touchdowns, and Wisconsin’s biggest win came against No. 13 Nebraska via blowout.
This sort of thing grinds my gears, but there’s still a lot of football to be played. After all, Wisconsin gets Michigan State this Saturday. Who does Boise State have? Oh yeah, they get Air Force, but hey, Kellen Moore looked great throwing against those Colorado State Rams right?
Along with Wisconsin, these are the four other teams that the BCS snubbed.
No. 6 Wisconsin
1 of 5All I have to say is this team has one of the best quarterbacks in the nation, they’re undefeated, their hog-mollies upfront are bigger than the Green Bay Packers’ offensive line and they beat Nebraska 48-17 in a statement game.
Now, I’m not saying they should be in the Top 3, and I can live with Oklahoma State in the fourth slot for the moment. But the fact that this team is behind Boise State really irks me.
Should the Badgers beat Michigan State this Saturday, they should jump Boise State in the polls, or it would be a disgrace on the polls part. Don’t you love this time of year?
No. 15 West Virginia
2 of 5I have a big problem with West Virginia landing in the No. 15 slot, simply because this offense can put numbers on any defense in the nation. Don’t believe me? Look at what they did against LSU’s amazing defense.
Geno Smith has played like a man possessed this year with his 16 touchdowns and three interceptions, and Stedman Bailey and Tavon Austin have been electrifying. But for some reason, this team doesn’t get a whole lot of publicity.
The schedule they’ve played minus LSU and Maryland has been less than challenging, but they posted blowouts against the rest of their opponents.
I guess the biggest problem I have is that they’re behind Nebraska and Virginia Tech, when quite frankly, they’ve looked more impressive than those teams this year.
The Mountaineers have a challenging climb ahead of them to get to a BCS bowl, but should they win out, West Virginia will be able to prove their worth in the Fiesta Bowl.
No. 20 Auburn
3 of 5Auburn is behind Houston in the polls. Really? I get that Houston is undefeated and people mistake Case Keenum for Matt Schaub these days in that city, but it’s all about the competition you play.
Auburn has been the surprise team in the SEC West so far this season, and they’ve beaten Florida, Mississippi State and South Carolina.
Might I remind you that this team still has Gus Malzahn calling the plays for the offense with Michael Dyer and Onterrio McCalebb running all over the place. Both of the Tigers’ losses have come at the hands of Clemson and Arkansas, who are both top ten teams.
What’s unfair about Auburn being ranked behind Houston is most likely Auburn will drop out of the polls next week when they have to play LSU in Tiger Stadium, and Houston will climb the polls after putting 47ish points up on Marshall.
Here’s to you, little sisters of the poor.
Not Ranked: Georgia
4 of 5Let me get this straight, I’m just making sure I have this right. So Texas gets ranked No. 24 by the BCS, and Georgia doesn’t break the Top 25?
Both teams are 4-2, but this is why Georgia deserves to be ranked ahead of Texas. Georgia is on a five-game win streak, Texas is coming off of back-to-back losses and Georgia’s wins are more impressive than Texas’ wins.
Texas beat Rice, BYU, UCLA and Iowa State, while the Bulldogs beat Tennessee, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. With South Carolina losing Marcus Lattimore, I look at Georgia as the team to beat in SEC East right now.
Aaron Murray is a great quarterback who has had his fair share of troubles this year, but Murray is starting to turn it on. If he gets hot and Isaiah Crowell continues to impress, this team could be playing in Atlanta in December.
I’ll give the BCS a break with this one for right now, but if Texas is ranked higher than Georgia after a victory against Florida, it will be an injustice.
Not Ranked: Arizona State
5 of 5If Georgia doesn’t have a good argument to be ranked ahead of Texas, then Arizona State does.
Arizona State’s only two losses on the year came against Illinois and Oregon, who are both ranked in the Top 25 of BCS. And, unlike Georgia and Texas, the Sun Devils have a victory over a ranked team.
Arizona State defeated Missouri and USC this year while both teams were ranked, and Brock Osweiler has lived up to the “height” so far this season.
This 6-foot-8 quarterback has a rocket for an arm and has thrown for 15 touchdowns so far this season. They are coming off of a loss to Oregon 41-27, but it isn’t like they lost to their arch rival 55-17.
I’m not a Longhorn hater, but it just blows my mind that they were able to be ranked in the Top 25 over teams like Arizona State and Georgia.
As you can tell, I've missed the BCS.
