BCS Rankings: Oregon and 3 One-Loss Teams Still in the Title Hunt

Nathan LoweryOct 16, 2011

With the first BCS rankings recently being released, we can now start to see what teams have legitimate shots at the national championship.

With eight of the Top 10 teams being unbeaten, one-loss teams are going to have a ridiculously hard time at making it to the BCS National Championship Game.

However, there are four teams that have an imperfect record that could make it, if the right scenario plays out.

No. 9 Arkansas Razorbacks

1 of 4

The Razorbacks only blemish on their record this year is a 38-14 loss at No. 2-ranked Alabama, hardly something that will absolutely destroy Arkansas.

Lead by Tyler Wilson, the Razorbacks are 17th in offensive points in the nation and 8th in passing offense.

Their defense has been above-average allowing only 21.3 points per game and the offense is playing well without last year's leading conference rusher Knile Davis who went out with an injury in camp.

With quality wins over two Top 15 teams, Auburn and Texas A&M, Arkansas is holding stead fast and is the top ranked one loss team.

With a home game at South Carolina and an away game at Death Valley against the top ranked Tigers, Arkansas is in good position to move up the rankings. If they can figure out how to combat LSU's stingy defense, we could see a berth in the national championship for Bobby Petrino and his team.

No. 10 Oregon Ducks

2 of 4

Like Arkansas, Oregon's only blemish is an opening week loss to a top ranked team, in case of the Ducks, it was LSU.

Oregon does have the tougher road back then Arkansas, playing in the less-competitive Pac-12 and will struggle finding quality wins.

So far the Ducks only quality win was against No. 18 Arizona State on Saturday night.

With away games at ranked Washington and Stanford still looming on Oregon's schedule, the Ducks have to win both those games, and win pretty.

If they can make it to the Pac-12 Championship and win that over a ranked team, the Ducks could be back in the Natty.

No. 13 Nebraska Cornhuskers

3 of 4

Playing now in a much more competitive Big Ten Conference, Nebraska is fairing quite well with only one loss to sixth ranked Wisconsin.

The Cornhuskers have four more chances to prove something in road games at Penn State and Michigan, a home game against Michigan State, and then the Big Ten Championship Game if they win those three games.

All three of those teams are ranked and my money is on Wisconsin winning the Leaders Division so Nebraska will be in for a fight all season long.

The Blackshirts defense is not there, being ranked 67th in the nation in points against, and Taylor Martinez is still struggling to pass the ball. If those two things aren't fixed, Louisiana is not in future for Nebraska.

No. 16 Michigan State Spartans

4 of 4

Michigan State has an equally hard time making it to the national championship as division rival Nebraska does.

With their only loss being to an average Notre Dame team that notched losses against South Florida and Michigan, Michigan State fell behind fast.

They were able to win their rivalry game against Michigan to climb back up the polls but face a tough test next week hosting the sixth ranked Wisconsin Badgers.

The top five nationally ranked defense will have a tough match-up against Russel Wilson and the dynamic Badgers offense.

After that only a game at Nebraska gives Michigan State a shot at the Big Ten Championship game and the National Championship.
