BCS Rankings 2011: Predicting Outcome of 5 Best Possible Championship Games

Tom PerryOct 16, 2011

LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have a luxury no other team in college football can claim today.

Each one controls its own destiny as these four top the inaugural BCS Rankings for 2011.

So the odds are pretty high two of these four will be playing for a championship in January.

But what are the best possible matchups at the end of the season?

Let's take a look at the five best games that we could get...

5. Wisconsin vs. Oklahoma

1 of 5

While Wisconsin will need a little help to get into the BCS Championship, the Badgers have one of the nation's most exciting offenses.

Transfer Russell Wilson has ignited Wisconsin to the point every player believes they can play with anyone in the nation.

It would be a Cam Newton-type story without all of the controversy of last season.

Of course, many fans would be disappointed to see an Big Ten team playing for a championship again, but the Badgers would represent.

The problem would more than likely come on the defensive side of the ball as the Sooners offense probably has too many weapons for Wisconsin.

It will be close for three quarters, but Oklahoma will pull away late.

Prediction: Oklahoma 37, Wisconsin 28

4. Boise State vs. LSU

2 of 5

Who doesn't want to watch the Tyrann Mathieu just toy with Boise State's Kellen Moore?

This is such a good match up because it gives Boise a chance to shut up a lot of people, who just don't believe in them.

Of course, the odds of the Broncos getting in this game are pretty slim even though they are ranked fifth in the initial BCS rankings.

However, if Chris Peterson and the Broncos finally got their shot there is no question that Boise will give the TV viewers some outrageous plays that we could be talking about for decades.

Let's not forget that LSU's defense did give up more than 400 yards to West Virginia, which plays a up-tempo, spread game. Boise could learn something from this.

It should be noted that LSU still won that game 47-21.

Of course, LSU's Les Miles wouldn't want to be outdone so he'll devise a few special Mad Hatter plays himself.

This game could be close for a half, but I like LSU's chances of wearing down Boise in the second half.

Prediction: LSU 38, Boise State 20

3. Oklahoma State vs. SEC Champion

3 of 5

Much like Nike's Phil Knight got his shot with Oregon last year, now major Oklahoma State benefactor T. Boone Pickens will learn if all his donations will translate into a BCS Championship.

The Cowboys must get past Oklahoma at the end of the season to be in play, but with that offense anything is possible.

And if OSU can beat the Sooners defense then it will be ready for anything the SEC champ throws at them.

So Oklahoma State will rely a lot on Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon to outscore either LSU or Alabama.

The difference in this game will be the SEC team's confidence of playing in this game, and that's too much for the Cowboys to overcome.

Prediction: SEC Champ 42, Oklahoma State 35

2. Oklahoma vs. LSU

4 of 5

This would be a rematch of the 2004 BCS Championship Game, which LSU won 21-14.

This would give the Sooners a shot at redemption—at least for Bob Stoops.

LSU's defense has been up to the challenge all season, and the Tigers will get an even tougher foe in Alabama later this season.

So it goes without saying, LSU will be battle tested when it comes in against Oklahoma. If all goes well, LSU would become the first program to win three BCS Championships.

Naturally, Oklahoma will also be ready for the spotlight, and looking to improve on its 1-3 record in the BCS Championship.

Landry Jones will get the edge at quarterback, but the Jarrett Lee/Jordan Jefferson thing is working for the Tigers.

Prediction: LSU 21, Oklahoma 17

1. Alabama vs. Oklahoma

5 of 5

When Alabama won the 2009 Championship, the Tide were ranked No. 2 in the initial BCS Standings.

Well, guess where Alabama is ranked in this year's initial BCS Rankings? Yep, No. 2.

So Nick Saban is feeling pretty good.

Of course Alabama must navigate the remainder of its SEC games, including a huge showdown in Tuscaloosa with No. 1 LSU.

But the good part is Alabama controls its destiny.

So does No. 3 Oklahoma, who also has a some big games to win before getting to this points, including a tough game with Oklahoma State on the last weekend of the season.

Oklahoma has the better offense, but Alabama's defense is stifling.

What happens when these two take the field?

Well, Alabama's offense is more balanced than most realize as A.J. McCarron has established himself as a reliable quarterback. Also, Trent Richardson could very easily be the new Heisman Trophy winner.

Alabama's defense will have its hands full with trying to stop Landry Jones and his NFL-caliber receivers. Also, Oklahoma's defense doesn't get the publicity that LSU and Alabama get, but the Sooners defense is up to the challenge.

This matchup will accomplish what the BCS is supposed to do—put the best two teams on the field with the title on the line.

In the previous slide I picked LSU to take down the Sooners, but Oklahoma matches up better against Alabama.

Prediction: Oklahoma 28, Alabama 27
