Early Thoughts on San Francisco 49ers and Detriot Lions Fight

Josh TroesterOct 16, 2011

As we are all very aware, the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions had quite a confrontation at the end of their Week 6 clash that saw the end of the Lions undefeated streak.  The 49ers defeated the Lions 25-19 at Ford Field, their third win on the road in the Eastern Time Zone this year.  Jim Harbaugh obviously stoked after the victory was celebrating with his team and to Jim Schwartz opinion, failed to yield a proper post-game coach handshake.

This event exploded when Schwartz chased down Harbaugh expressing his frustration with Harbaugh's interaction with him.  Moments later, security and players were involved.  They were involved so much so that both teams had to enter their respective locker rooms separately.

Here are my early thoughts on this confrontation and what it means for both teams and coaches.

Harbaugh's College-Like Celebrations Are Not Well Received

Harbaugh is a fiery guy.  He is competitive and loves to win.  Who doesn't?  He chooses to celebrate with his players when victory ensues.  Rex Ryan does this, and so does Pete Carroll.  For some reason there are some head coaches in the NFL that find that disrespectful, especially if this occurs on the field and in front of the losing team.

No matter how you feel about it, there is nothing illegal about it.  It's not unsportsman like, unless inappropriate actions or words are exchanged.  Let a guy a celebrate once in a while!

That being said, I bet you see a little less of it from Harbaugh.  I think he realizes that he needs to slow down and pay attention to who he's high-fiving.  It may be the other team's head coach.

Schwartz Was Embarassed

I understand Jimmy.  It hurts to drop your first game of the year to a team you feel is possibly overrated.  After all, you have Megatron and Stafford, what could go wrong?

Schwartz may have not given it a second thought if it occurred after a win, but since it was a loss he wasn't a bit more edgy than normal.  A post game, man-to-man phone call probably would do.  Chasing the man down to the point that your teams get involved is a little much.

Final Thoughts

Can't we all just get along?  No!  It is football.  There will always be fights and words exchanged.  Obviously, the coaches should not be the one throwing the first punch.

Harbaugh did not mean to come off as he did, and he admitted to that.  Schwartz over dramatized the situation and is likely to feel slightly embarrassed when he watches it at home tonight on SportsCenter.

Who wins in this confrontation?  The fans win!  The Lions and 49ers appear to be on their way to the playoffs.  If so, they very well may see each other again.  Could this be the NFL's newest rivalry born before our eyes?
