Todd Grantham vs. James Franklin: Which Coach Is to Blame Here for the Fight?
Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin nearly came to blows after Georgia's 33-28, victory.
Grantham was very upset for the way Franklin approached a Bulldogs' player after the game. Grantham is an intense coach. In 2010, Grantham went on an epic tirade in the Bulldogs' matchup against the Florida Gators.
On the other hand, James Franklin has never showed the propensity for anything like this. If he has a temper, he has kept it in check.
Two coaches fired up after a heated SEC matchup is a recipe for confrontation. Especially when coaches involve players.
What James Franklin said, or did, to a Bulldogs' player is unclear. If he did something inappropriate, you can't blame Grantham for flying off the handle after an intense, hard-fought game.
Given Grantham's past antics, it is possible he misinterpreted Franklin's actions or his intentions. If that is the case, Grantham is building quite the reputation around the SEC.
Franklin did appear to point toward the gathering Georgia players after the game. It isn't clear if he said anything but based on the gesture it would make sense. Franklin's frustration following a loss isn't an excuse to say anything to an opposing player.
Under no circumstance should a coach call out a player.
Grantham did the right thing by coming to his players' defense. However, he should have diffused the situation before players became involved.
The second players started arguing themselves, Grantham needed to become a coach again.
Get to the locker room and celebrate a much-needed victory.
Coaches are leaders first and foremost. That requires backing up your squad, but also knowing when to take control.
