Georgia Assistant Todd Grantham Stands Up for Players After Vandy Win
Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator Todd Grantham stood up for his players in the moments following his team's 33-28 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday when he got into a heated conversation with Commodores head coach James Franklin.
The two had to be separated by a law enforcement officer and a Vandy player.
Franklin spoke after the game about the incident, but refused to offer any concrete details of the altercation.
"We just had a tough, emotional game, and some things were said that I didn't think were appropriate," Franklin said. "I went to find [Georgia coach Mark] Richt and didn't find him, so I found one of his assistant coaches, and it didn't go well. We're not going to sit back and take it from anyone."
When you look at the postgame video as the two teams walk onto the field after a very physical game and the coaches walk towards each other to meet, Franklin can be see going walking towards Bulldogs safety Shawn Williams, who was called for two personal foul penalties on the night.
That's when Grantham came in and stuck up for his safety, and started pointing and scolding Franklin right in his face, forcing the two to be separated.
Grantham said after the game, "I love my players and I'm going to support my players."
Grantham has every right to get in Franklin's face and tell him to back off his player. It's not right for an opposing coach to go after a player on the other team, what needs to be done is the angered coach confront's the player he has an issue with's coach.
Grantham did what every good coach does and made sure he had the back of his guys, no matter the situation.
Grantham has had his angry moments on the field with players and coaches before, but he did not start this situation.
He simply came to the defense of his player that was being unprofessionally treated by the opposing team's head coach.
This unity is exactly what Georgia needs in the midst of a tough season, one that is getting better however.
The Bulldogs are now 5-2 after a slow start to the season, and this team unity and sticking up for one another is great to see as the second half of the season commences.
