Projected BCS Standings 2011: How the Top 10 Will Look Tonight
Tonight is the night. Yes, you will be hearing that a lot today, but at least it is completely true. College Football America finally gets to see where the BCS computers rank their teams.
For some it will be ugly; for others it will be glorious.
However, the top ten has made it easy on us this year. Through seven weeks, nine teams from the automatic qualifying conferences remain undefeated. Put simply enough, eight of the top ten will be undefeated (sorry Kansas State).
At 8 ET tonight the world of college football will be morphed by machines; predicting what the BCS spits out always seems impossible. I will work to do the improbable and give you, the everlasting college football fan, a sneak peek at the BCS top ten.
No. 10 Oregon Ducks
1 of 10We start off our top ten BCS teams with a 5-1 Oregon team whose lone loss came at the hands of a top-tiered LSU squad. After beating a more-than-decent Arizona State team last night, the Ducks have proven they once again belong in the BCS elite.
Darron Thomas may be out for the time being after tweaking his knee against the Sun Devils, but in all likelihood he will be back. Oregon really can't do much moving around until four weeks from now when they take on a good Stanford team away from home.
Oregon has more than enough talent and prowess to make it back to a BCS bowl game, but running the table from now till Thanksgiving weekend will be a tough task for the Ducks.
No. 9 Arkansas Razorbacks
2 of 10A 5-1 Arkansas squad rolls into the No. 9 slot on the BCS rankings purely because their lone loss is to a top-tiered Alabama team, similar to the Oregon situation.
Unfortunately for the Razorbacks, they still have to take on a very tough South Carolina team at home and then then visit Death Valley for a season finale against the Bayou Bengals.
Arkansas has a lot of talent and a great QB in Tyler Wilson. To take down some other top 10 teams though, the Razorback defense will have to step it up.
Look for a couple great match-ups later this year between Arkansas and SEC opponents.
No. 8 Stanford Cardinal
3 of 10Stanford will get screwed all the way to the bottom of the undefeated teams. However, it's for good reason.
So far this season, the Cardinal have not played a signal ranked team. Left on the schedule, they have only one remaining ranked opponent in the Oregon Ducks, so it's really tough to give them much credit.
With a Heisman candidate like Andrew Luck running your offense, Stanford really needs to continue to crush their other Pac-12 opponents and work towards the Oregon game—their only real chance to prove themselves.
No. 7 Boise State Broncos
4 of 10This might come as a surprise to you if you've been stuck in a cave for the past few years, but the Broncos are going to get screwed in the BCS rankings.
Don't get me wrong; I think Boise is tough to rank high too considering their schedule, but they do win by tons of points and Kellen Moore definitely is the entire package. Boise State has to—as they always have—wait around for their top-ten brethren to lose so they can have another chance to bust the BCS.
With no ranked opponents left in sight, this MWC newbie just needs to keep winning. At the very least, they receive at-large bid and get to go knock off another big shot BCS-AQ squad.
I would personally love to see them face off against any SEC team not in the title game.
No. 6 Wisconsin Badgers
5 of 10The B1G's top-ranked team in this year's BCS poll will get dropped because they've had a relatively easy schedule so far this year. With a powerful win over Nebraska, the Badgers still have something left to prove the computers.
Roughing up the Spartans next weekend will be a good start and considering that two pairs of the top four still have to play each other, Wisconsin will get their chance soon.
Winning out and taking the first B1G Championship game will put them in a category with no one else and earn them a possible title bid.
No. 5 Clemson Tigers
6 of 10The Tigers have shown up out of nowhere this season and now could stand with the top five BCS teams. Dabo Swinney has led this team to beat powers like Auburn, Florida State and Virginia Tech all pretty handily.
Clemson believes it deserves to be in the top 10 and will get that opportunity to show it. They really only have Georgia Tech—who lost yesterday—and South Carolina left to compete against this season. Winning out will not a easy, but Dabo and company have all the tools to procure Clemsom's elusive ACC Title.
No. 4 Oklahoma State Cowboys
7 of 10If the Badgers are the undefeated team that got screwed, the Cowboys are the lucky squad that took their place. Oklahoma State looked really solid against a decent Texas team yesterday and hold all the keys to their own future.
Brandon Weeden and OSU's high-octane offense are national title contenders this year. Expect Weeden to continue to perform down the stretch. As long as the defense holds teams in crucial drives like they've done all season, this Cowboys might be on their way to New Orleans.
No. 3 Oklahoma Sooners
8 of 10The Sooners have been all over the top three this year so far, but the BCS will drop them right back down the bottom of the pile with LSU and Alabama.
The Sooners have been consistent this year and Landry Jones has looked like the Heisman candidate he is. Stoops and OU will continue to win in order to earn their national title berth this year, but with their in-state brothers finally challenging, don't expect this to be easy.
Boasting a powerful defense, the Sooners just need to keep their focus and inch their way from Norman to the title game.
The season finale of the regular season will be a huge game in Stillwater against the Cowboys, as the winner takes all and heads to New Orleans.
No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide
9 of 10The Tide will roll in an extremely tough SEC West. When the top two teams play in your division, you know you compete in the toughest division in the nation.
Alabama are title contenders again this year, looking to knock off top-ranked LSU in two weeks. Trent Richardson is performing amazingly so far this year; expect that to continue as the Tide keep winning.
Nick Saban is a tough coach to beat and his team could be playing for their second national championship in three years with a win against the Tigers.
No. 1 LSU Tigers
10 of 10LSU tops it off this year due to their sheer strength of schedule so far. Taking down four ranked opponents already this season, Les Miles should be proud of his Tigers.
Continuing to win is a different story though if they want to go down the road to New Orleans for a chance to win another National Championship. The defense must perform as they have while the offense must put more consistent numbers.
LSU sits right in the middle of the meat of their conference schedule, knocking a decent Tennessee team yesterday. Expect more great things from Tyrann Mathieu while Jarrett Lee continues to get it done under center.
