College Football 2011: Pretenders from Week 7

Dan VastaOct 15, 2011

Several teams in Week 7 disappointed us, and we do not need to look any further then the Big Ten.

Many were just lured by the Michigan Wolverines since Denard Robinson is one of the most explosive players on the planet. This is football, and a one-man team will never win you a place in the BCS.

Meanwhile, llinois and Georgia Tech were also attempting to crack the top 10 in the upcoming BCS standings, and yet, they could not stop the lowly Ohio State Buckeyes or Virginia Cavaliers.

I have a few eye-popping stats that will just boggle your mind as I look at the biggest frauds from Week 7.

No. 11 Michigan Wolverines

1 of 4

Michigan State 28, Michigan 14

This Michigan team came into their game sky high with confidence, and even the top-ranked Spartans defense did not have the talent to keep up with them.

At least, most thought that until the game started. Big Jerel Worthy was in beast mode all game long, and the rest of the Spartan front four just bottled up the Michigan running game. Michigan came into the game averaging 270 yards a pop (seventh).

The Spartans came in allowing the least amount of rushing yards in the country. They walked out after the game still ranking third in the nation allowing just 64 yards a game!

Denard Robinson only ran for 42 yards on 18 carries, and though he reached paydirt, Sparty held him in check.

Plus, the lack of a true downhill runner in the backfield just killed the Wolverines offense. Robinson is the best runner in the country for his position, but the guy can only take so many hits.

This Michigan squad was a bit overrated with their ranking at the top 10, and the question remains if they can reach that coveted double digit mark?

The Outback and Capital One Bowl will be calling soon if they can reach the Big Ten Championship, but they are still a long ways away before that occurs.

No. 12 Georgia Tech

2 of 4

Virginia 24, Georgia Tech 21

The Yellow Jackets came into this weekend as my most overrated team in the nation, and they did not disappoint. Taking nothing away from the team since they were playing out of their minds, however, they were eventually going to lose.

The defense was starting to get gashed against mediocre competition, and they barely won their home date with North Carolina a month ago.

Did America really think the Jackets were going to be unscathed going into their date with Clemson?

Maryland nearly beat them in their own backyard, so their time was coming. Georgia Tech could not find Stephen Hill for any catches, and the passing game suffered mightily.

I simply ask if it will get worse for the Jackets? They have Miami on the road next week which will be a great test, and regardless if they were to lose in consecutive weeks, they have a ton of challenges in the near future.

The schedule does no favors with Clemson awaiting on October 29th, and then, a brutal home date on a Thursday with Virginia Tech very likely will determine the Coastal Division and any chances of reaching a BCS Bowl.

No. 16 Illinois

3 of 4

Ohio State 17, Illinois 7

There is a stat that is so humiliating for Illinois that I am not sure if I should even reveal it. The Buckeyes starting quarterback Braxton Miller completed just one pass out of four attempts! For the entire game.

Ohio State forced the ball down the throats of Illinois 51 times for 211 yards with Daniel "Boom" Herron leading the way. Herron could not be denied totaling 114 yards and reaching paydirt on his 23 carries.

Jordan Hall ran for 56, and Miller ran for an additional 34 yards. Illinois turned it over three times, and that was their main demise, but are the Fighting Illini really a legit top-15 team?

Today, gave us a clear answer, but Illinois can still prove they are worthy when they play the likes of Wisconsin and Michigan.

I am still not sold on the boys from Champagne, but they better put this game past them before it leads to a few losses.

No. 20 Baylor

4 of 4

Texas A&M 55, Baylor 28

Talk about another defensive team that had no business being ranked in my eyes. Baylor got smoked 55-28!

No offense to the Baylor Bears, but their defense was not good enough to handle an offense like the Aggies.

Baylor came into the game ranked 83rd against the run, allowing 169 yards a game, and they were not good overall as a defense ranking 60th.

Talk about an explosion, the Aggies gashed them for 681 yards of offense! Ryan Tannehill went bonkers throwing for 415 yards and six touchdowns.

Christine Michael also ran roughshod against the Bears weak defense, and I wonder if Baylor will be ranked again this season?

We know how explosive Robert Griffin and Kendall Wright are, but they can't score enough for a bad defense.

Griffin is a superstar among superstars, but without a defense in the Big 12, you will never finish a season in the top 25.

Looking at Baylor's schedule, I wonder if they can even reach the eight-win plateau with Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Texas left.

This is one of their best squads in a long time, but any chance of a New Year's Day Bowl was thrown out the door after the woodshed beating they just took.
