Big East Expansion: Big Vote on Monday May Clear Way for Boise State Football

Martin SondermannOct 15, 2011

The latest news out of the Big East is that they are one step closer to inviting several schools, including Boise State.

Boise State president Bob Kustra acknowledged Saturday that the school has had informal talks with the Big East, but that no official invitation has been received. However, Kustra indicated that Boise State is weighing all options.

According to one key source, "a leading college official" according to Tom Luicci of the Star-Ledger, Monday night may be the key to all of this.

The remaining six football schools in the Big East will officially vote on doubling the exit fees from the current level of $5 million to $10 million for football schools. The measure is in line with the 72-hour advance notification protocol concerning changes in Big East bylaws, and Monday night the schools will vote.

The conference only needs 75 percent of its members to agree in order for changes to be taken into effect. All indications are the schools will pass, while the "source" says he expects it will pass unanimously, according to the Star-Ledger.

What does this mean for Boise State? Well, it is probably one of the biggest hurdles to joining the Big East for the Broncos, who are certainly worried about the stability of the conference.

If the Big East can convince and reassure the Broncos and other schools—Boise State, Houston, Air Force, Navy, Southern Methodist and Central Florida are reportedly the primary targets—that the conference will be stable, we might just see Boise State heading to the East..

Stay tuned for more, probably after the vote Monday night.
