College Football Scores: Michigan and Illinois Show True Colors in Bad Losses

Richard LangfordOct 15, 2011

Michigan and Illinois look like nothing more than middle-of-the-pack Big Ten teams. They both proved on Saturday that the second spot in the Big Ten championship game is wide open. Coming into Saturday, along with Wisconsin, they were undefeated Big Ten teams.

It was quickly beginning to look like they were going to be the teams to beat. That's all different now. Let's take a look at just how exposed these two teams were.

Michigan State took the run away from Michigan and completely crippled their offense in the process. Michigan ran for just 82 yards at 2.3 yards per carry.

This forced Denard Robinson into more of a traditional QB role. He had to throw 31 passes, and he did not look good doing it. He only completed 12 of those passes.

This led to them being easily handled despite the fact that MSU had more turnovers and 13 penalties for 124 yards.

Michigan does not have the defense to overcome being such a one-dimensional offense.

Illinois

Illinois lost to team that completed just one pass all game. Ohio State entered this game struggling at the QB position.

To solve that problem, they decided to just not throw the ball. They had just four pass attempts on the game and only completed one of them.

They ran 51 times and Illinois did little to stop them. Ohio State ran up 211 yards rushing. And it's not like they run the wishbone or the triple option.

Illinois doomed themselves with their soft defense and turnovers. And in the process, they proved they have a lot of work to do before they can contend for the Big Ten.
