BCS Rankings Week 8: Boise State and 5 Teams That Could Shock the BCS

Nicholas GossOct 16, 2011

When the first BCS rankings of the 2011 college football season are unveiled Sunday night, there are sure to be some surprises.

The Boise State Broncos are the most intriguing team surrounding the first BCS standings because they are the best school from a non-BCS conference.

We all know they are a quality team, but how high should they be ranked? BCS schools like Wisconsin, Clemson, Kansas State and Arizona State have all had good seasons and will hope they can crash the BCS party from the get-go.

Let's look at five teams that could shock the BCS.

Kansas State Wildcats

1 of 5

The Kansas State Wildcats are currently 6-0 on the season and ranked No. 17 in the latest AP poll, but with losses on Saturday to teams ranked ahead of them such as Michigan and Illinois, KSU's rank will improve by Sunday.

The Wildcats will be helped in the BCS computers by quality wins against Miami (FL), Missouri and No. 15 Baylor.

Kansas State is a good football team in a deep Big 12 conference, and could surprise people with their place in the initial BCS rankings.

Nebraska Corn Huskers

2 of 5

Nebraska's first season as a member of the Big-10 conference has gone well, and except for a loss to No. 4 Wisconsin, their season has been good.

Not surprisingly, the Corn Huskers are one of the best rushing teams in the country, averaging 246.8 rush yards per game which is good for eighth best in the country.

Nebraska is a quality team whose only loss was to one of the premier teams in America, but if they received a top 10 BCS ranking on Sunday it would be a surprise.

West Virginia Mountaineers

3 of 5

The West Virginia Mountaineers aren't the national power they were a few years ago, but they have had an impressive season thus far.

Their only loss was to No. 1 ranked LSU, and they managed to score 21 points on the top-ranked Tigers.

The Mountaineers will benefit from Michigan's loss on Saturday and will approach the top 10 of the new AP poll.

West Virginia is a very good offensive team. They are 12th in the nation in scoring with 40.8 points per game, and fourth in passing with 380.5 yards per game.

The Mountaineers can put up points on anyone, and could surprise people in the BCS standings over the next few weeks.

Oregon Ducks

4 of 5

The Oregon Ducks are flying under the radar this season after their season opening loss to No. 1 LSU, and they've since gotten much better.

The Ducks as usually are scoring a ton of points, and are second in the nation with 50.8 points scored per game. Oregon's rushing game is spectacular too, and they are fifth in the nation with 312.6 yards on the ground per game.

The Ducks have quality wins against Arizona State and California, and may shock some people when the first BCS rankings are unveiled.

All things considered, their only loss was to the best team in the country in a game the Ducks played uncharacteristically poorly.

Boise State Broncos

5 of 5

The Boise State Broncos are trying to bust the BCS this season and earn a spot in the BCS National Championship, but that will be tough to do if they don't get help from teams ahead of them losing.

The Broncos Mountain West conference schedule is poor, and their best win is against Georgia.

However, Boise State is a very good team with a Heisman Trophy worthy quarterback in Kellen Moore. Their defense is also strong, and they are 10th in the nation in points allowed with just 14.8 points per game.

Boise State is a great team that could shock the BCS, and if they do climb the rankings, the rest of the country will be furious.
