Projected BCS Rankings 2011: 5 One-Loss Teams That Will Still Make Noise

Carl StineOct 15, 2011

The first loss for a college football team is the toughest to handle.

All the expectations and excitement come crashing down with a resounding "boom."

However, one loss during the course of a college football season does not necessarily kill the season.

It usually eliminates any non-SEC school from BCS title contention, but it's still possible to have a very good year after suffering defeat.

So which one-loss squads will be back making some noise this season?

Here are five teams that currently have one loss that should not be forgotten.

Virginia Tech Hokies

1 of 5

Do not write off Frank Beamer and the Hokies.

Sure, they looked inept against Clemson in their only loss of the season, but they have been the most consistent team in the ACC for the past decade, and will be back,

The road trip to Wake Forest today is only the first bump in the road, but every game is a winnable one for a team with Beamer's defense.

If the Hokies continue to see improvement from Logan Thomas over the next few weeks, they could take out Georgia Tech later in the season and run the table.

West Virginia Mountaineers

2 of 5

Anybody heard anything about West Virginia since they fell to LSU?

Nope, me neither.

Even so, this squad is scary.

New head coach Dana Holgorsen has got the offense rolling in a manner reminiscent of his Oklahoma State squads.

The Big East is still the weakest BCS conference in the country, and WVU will come back from this and finish with one loss, in a BCS bowl...

Arkansas Razorbacks

3 of 5

It's not likely the Razorbacks finish the remainder of the season without a loss since they still have to face LSU.

However, they will go without another loss until the final game of the season against the Tigers.

Tyler Wilson has proven to be an apt replacement for Ryan Mallett, and even without Knile Davis the running game keeps churning out yards.

The SEC is brutally competitive, but given the improvement of this defense and the weapons available on offense, expect them to make some noise in the conference before the season is over.

Michigan Wolverines

4 of 5

Sorry, Michigan fans, I know this is still really fresh, but it looks like "little brother" still has your number.

But please don't jump off the bandwagon as yet.

The Wolverines still have a very manageable schedule, while Michigan State's is pretty difficult.

An appearance in the Big Ten title game is still not out of reach, but Denard will have to get back to 100 percent, and start getting a little better at protecting the ball.

Oregon Ducks

5 of 5

Even with LaMichael James out tonight, the Ducks should be able to handle ASU at home.

If they do, it leaves only the Stanford Cardinal that have a chance of matching up with the Ducks and taking them down this season.

This team has some experience at key positions, a potent offense and the schemes to keep other units off balance.

This team is not quite as scary as last season's version, but they are pretty darn close, and the Rose Bowl is a likely destination...
