It was a difficult ricochet to play off the post for Messi because the ball was bouncing with spin on it, but like he has so many times for Barcelona before, he made a difficult shot look so easy.
Messi drove the ball into the ground and past Santander goalkeeper Toño.
The strike was Messi's second goal of the game, he scored in the 11th minute as well.
With his 195th and 196th goals in all competitions for Barcelona, Messi moved past Laszlo Kubala on the club's all time scoring list.
Racing Santander manager Hector Cuper, who has managed Inter Milan and Parma in his career, said in an ESPN Soccernet article on Thursday that Barcelona as close to perfection as he's ever seen.
""I have a very clear opinion about Barcelona," Cuper said. "Since I've been in the world of football, I've never seen anything like them. They are the tops. They're the best team in the world, far ahead of the rest."
"Can anybody tell me whether [Sergio] Busquets is a defender or midfield player, whether [Lionel] Messi is a winger, striker, midfield player, or plays just behind the strikers, not to mention [Javier] Mascherano. I've always said that perfection doesn't exist, but Barca are the closest I've ever seen."
"
Lionel Messi is world class talent and he showed why today with another stunning scoring display. The amazing this is it probably won't take him long to have another game like this again—he's just that good.
