NFL Trade Deadline: Why Philadelphia Eagles Should Be Biggest Buyers

Justin WeltonOct 15, 2011

Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles' offense have been solid in 2011.

Their defense, however, is the reason they are 1-4.

With the trade deadline looming, Philadelphia should be looking to improve their club, especially defensively.

Offensively, Vick and LeSean McCoy have been dynamic through five games. The rushing attack leads the NFL with 166 yards per game. The passing attack is eighth with 280 yards per game.

Defense wins games in the NFL, though. The best example would be the Eagles.

Giving up 140 yards rushing on the ground, the Eagles' rush defense is ranked 30th in the NFL. Michael Turner, Frank Gore and Fred Jackson have all eclipsed the 100-yard plateau against the Eagles this season.

The defense has allowed 24 or more points in four of their five games this season.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter poses the idea of bringing back Brian Dawkins to help defensively. Dawkins is well past his prime at 38 years old, but he'd still be better than what the Eagles have currently.

Dawkins would also provide a much-needed leader to the defense.

He played with the Eagles for 13 seasons. He understands the city of Philadelphia, and he would provide a missing spark in a downtrodden locker room.

Another name Schefter threw out was Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams.

He would be a great fit in the middle of that defense. In two games, Williams has collected 17 tackles and one sack.

Williams has been solid in his eight-year career with the Broncos, posting 100+ tackles in four seasons. He has also increased his sack numbers in the past three seasons from one to five and a half in 2010.

If the Eagles land these two players, they may still be on their way to winning the NFC East.
