Big East Expansion: Conference Will Implode After Failure to Lure Boise State

The Big East must be in a sense of disarray.

They lost Syracuse and Pittsburgh to the ACC, while TCU opted to change their mind, and heads off to join the Big 12 now.

That leaves the Big East with SMU, Houston and Central Florida. They have offered an invitation to Air Force and Boise State as well, for football only.

The Big East is reeling, and desperately needs to add quality football teams to maintain their automatic BCS bid. Without that automatic bid, they will lose a ton of money, and even worse their credibility.

However, according to a report from ESPN, neither the Big East nor Boise State are certain the addition of Boise State is right for the conference.

"The Big East is considering adding Boise State football to help bolster the conference's chances of retaining its BCS automatic bid, though both sides still need to be persuaded that it's the right move.

A college football official, who spoke Thursday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the Big East's plans, says some Big East presidents are resisting adding Boise State and the school itself has reservations about joining a conference in flux.

From the Big East perspective, there is no way they can possibly think adding Boise State is a bad idea.

They have no elite football teams at the moment outside of West Virginia, and should be worried about losing their automatic bid. Adding Boise State's football program would be an instant boost to the conference's credibility, and it would all but secure their spot as a BCS conference.

Boise State's reluctance certainly makes sense, as the Big East is extremely volatile as of late. With the Mountain West and Conference USA aiming to merge, they may be able to secure an automatic BCS bid.

Boise's best bet may be to stay put, but the Big East should be begging the Broncos to head east.
